On April 28, 2014 Christy's life took a dramatic turn. She was diagnosed with a Glioblastoma, stage 4, terminal brain tumor. Average life expectancy is 14 months. We knew Christy was a fighter and would last longer, but 18 months still seems too short.
The conventional treatment path is very gruesome and caused Christy a ton of pain (which she never complained about). She and I talked often that we wanted to find a way for people with this diagnosis to better access information and potential treatments that could prolong their life or, ultimately, cure them of this disease.
We also wanted to create a way for those hit with this diagnosis to experience some joy. We had the ability to travel with our children and close family members over her 18 month battle and those times made her struggle a little easier. We understand that we are extremely blessed with the ability to travel and there are several that do not have the means. We want to change that.
So, for those 2 reasons we will start a foundation in Christy's honor that will hopefully give others with a GBM diagnosis a little ray of hope and clarity of the path ahead. We are in the very early stages, but all the monies raised here will be meaningfully used to lessen the blow for others and create positive memories for them. This is where we would like any contributions or donations to go in lieu of flowers.
I have researched quite a bit and don't feel that there is a foundation that truly supports that patient and their quality of life with GBM, so we will start one of our own.
Christy always lived her life for others and that will not change simply because she passed. The fight continues on.
