Running for Rachel

Donation protected
In July 2012 Rachel was looking forward to the birth of her first child. After giving birth by caesarean doctors discovered a blood clot had travelled to Rachel's heart which stopped for 20 minutes. As a result of the complications, she suffered a hypoxic brain injury.  Rachel's family were told that she was only expected to live for a matter of hours and an air ambulance on standby to take her to the Walton Centre was cancelled. The staff at Wrexham Maelor Hospital refused to give up on Rachel, and thanks to both their skill, along with Rachel's steely determination, she is still here.

Rachel has been learning how to walk, stand and communicate again ever since. To aid her recovery, Rachel attends 4 physio sessions every week. These can be tiring and demanding for Rachel but she gives her all at every session and her therapists have said she is an absolute inspiration.

Only one of these sessions is funded by the NHS, the other three are private and cost £75 each, which totals almost £1000 a month. These are being paid for by the Rachel Harry Fund which Rachel's Dad Paul Harry and his friends set up. Rachel's family and friends have raised money so far with golf days, sponsored zip wire challenges, and fun days.

I first met Rachel in 1985 when we started Nursery school, and remained her classmate until we left High School in 1998. For a brief time, we also went to the same Brownie club as well. When I heard the story of what had happened to Rachel, it was hard to imagine. Rachel had always been a bright, bubbly and vivacious character and always had a smile on her face. I had contributed towards Rachel's fund through the various fundraisers held, but was unsure of what I could do myself to help.

Three years ago, around the time this happened to Rachel, I decided to make a change in my life - my weight. I had always been a chunky kid and teenager but as I grew older it only got worse, and I reached the point where I knew it needed to change.

Three years on I am over 3/4 of the way to reaching my target of just over 5.5 stone weight loss, and have become much more active and fit. I decided to enter the Farndon 10k race in October this year and thought this would be the perfect way to raise money to help towards these vital sessions for Rachel.

If you feel able to contribute to this in any way, even just 50p or £1, it will all help, and I know that I and Rachel's family will be very very  grateful.

Thank you
