Solidarity of Nations/Achvat Amim

Hello lovely humans!

I am Rum Samuel (known by some of you as Lara).

I graduated this year with my MA in Sexual Dissidence with the University of Sussex for which I wrote about queer Jewish identity, family-making and temporality. Some of you may have read it or heard me talking about it.

I am currently fundraising to help cover the costs for a 5 month programme based in Jerusalem called 'Achvat Amim' (meaning 'Solidarity of Nations').

During the programme participants live in communal lodging, study Hebrew and Arabic, critically study the conflict and do on the ground human rights activism with organisations of their choice such as the Palestine/Israel Journal, Rabbis for Human Rights and Hand in Hand: Center for Jewish-Arab Education.

As a queer Jew it has become increasingly important to me to educate myself in political and social justice and to take part in projects that engage in the work of Tikkun Olam (world healing). This project will help me to develop vital skills as a community member and activist and I look to take these skills forward into my local community in the UK. I believe that my success in my studies has shown that I am a committed and reliable person who thrives off of a passion for Jewish and Queer learning and I believe that I have found my niche!

Taking part in this project will help provide a sound base for further studies (a PhD) for which I would like to do community development work. The topic is not fixed as of yet but I am considering looking at interfaith activism and believe that this journey will help me with that. Partaking in a programme like this would show potential PhD funders that I am serious about my education and activist work and therefore hopefully persuade them to cover the high costs for doing a doctorate!

I believe in the type of academia that is accessible beyond the academic world - especially when it comes to topics of identity and activism. But the unfortunate reality is that entering the academic world is still very much a privilege that only some can afford. I therefore have comitted myself to making my own work as accessible as possible. I want my work to be part of a collective effort. I want others to feel positively involved!

I will be applying for grants and funding in other ways as well as working hard as a camp leader from May-September in order to save money, but it will be hard to raise enough this way.

If I raise the necessary funds and am therefore able to take part in Achvat Amim then I will publish an online blog about my experiences of the programme which you will all be able to follow.

I understand that there are many projects, charities and causes out there that you can choose to support and appreciate any donations or advice with other fundraising ideas. Let me know if you would like to get involved in any way beyond a donation.

With love and solidarity,

Rum
