As most of you already know, this year has been pretty special for me. I went back, for the first time, to the place where my life began - Sri Lanka. Most of you know my story - of being adopted and growing up in Australia (I guess that's probably how most of you know me!) It took me 30 years to go back to this place - and I am so glad that I built up the courage to do it.
As per the photo below, I found out this year that I was left at a hospital at age 2 months, and then taken to the Ruhunu Children's Orphanage, where I lived the first 1.5 years of my life. It was because of these women (both past and present) that I am still alive. I have so much to be thankful for, and now, it is my turn to help them.
On my most recent trip, the Matron asked me if I could possibly help the orphanage with a new renovation. They are looking at building a new baby's wing to the existing building. They currently have 6 cots crammed into a room the size of an average bedroom, and are needing to expand it to accommodate an additional 6 cots, plus a feeding and changing area for the babies, aged 0-6months old.
I have an architect who has drawn up the building, and he has some contractors who are willing to do the work. The funding would be to build the structure and work on the ventilation, as they are needing to create a space where these children can grow without disease and sickness. After so many years of war, homes like this have been left with very little Government Assistance.
I could fund this project myself, but wanted to give you - my friends - the opportunity to help out as well. Any dontation would be greatly appreciated, and if there is additional funding left over, there are future projects that could be brought forward - like repainting and updating the play equipment.
