Ben - Physiotherapist in Malawi

Donation protected
My Name is Ben Gwilliam. I am an Australian Physiotherapist who works at the Beit CURE International Hospital in Blantyre, Malawi.

CURE International is a Christian NGO that operates a network of hospitals and medical programs in underserved areas.  CURE’s focus is on serving children with correctable conditions – children who, because of their disability, are often treated as the very last in their communities: the last to be included, the last to be protected, sometimes even the last to be given food. CURE was founded in 1996 and opened their first hospital in 1998 in Kenya. Beit CURE International Hospital in Malawi followed in 2002. CURE now has a presence in 30 countries around the world.

Beit CURE International Hospital in Malawi specialises in paediatric orthopaedics, providing free orthopaedic care and rehabilitation to the children of Malawi. Each year, they provide 5000 free orthopaedic consultations, perform around 1500 surgeries, and provide rehabilitation to up to 3500 children. They also administer the Malawi National Clubfoot Program as part of the CURE Clubfoot program. On top of this, they also provide private orthopaedic consultations and rehabilitation to adults in order to supplement the funding they receive to continue their paediatric work.

I am hoping to raise AUD$12,500 through this Go Fund Me Campaign. This money will be a donation to CURE Malawi and will help them to support me to continue developing their Physiotherapy Department and develop the profession in Malawi over the next year.

Your donation will help me to continue to develop the CURE Physiotherapy Department and the profession in Malawi over the next year by:
-       Consulting on and treating Paediatric inpatients and outpatients at CURE
-       Managing the Physiotherapy Department at CURE
-       Provide training and supervision for 2 Rehabilitation Technicians and 1 Department assistant
-       Providing teaching and supervision in the Malawi National Clubfoot program
-       Treating private inpatients and outpatients and develop the hospital's private services as a means of generating income for the hospital to supplement their donations.  This increases the value of your donation by helping the hospital to become more self reliant and independent of donor funding.
-       Providing teaching and supervision services to Physiotherapy students from the University of Malawi and Physiotherapy interns from Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in Blantyre. There are only 25 registered Physiotherapists working in Malawi so this superivision and teaching is important for both the health system and disabiltiy services in Malawi so they can become less reliant on outside help.

AUD$12,000 will support me to continue providing skilled services as outlined above for 1 year.

AUD$500 will help purchase 2 folding portable treatment tables for CURE Malawi to aid in developing a mobile Physiotherapy service to sporting sides and corporate clients to aid with income generation to help the hospital become more self reliant.
