Send my students to Cape Canaveral!

Dear Friends and Community Members,

I am a science teacher at PS/IS 30 Mary White Ovington in Bay Ridge, and I am writing on behalf of my students.

Last year, these students competed in the Intrepid International Space Station Challenge, an experiment design competition led by the Intrepid Museum. My students designed an experiment testing how microgravity affects the germination of pot mum seeds, and their experiment won. As the winner, it will be flown to the International Space Station, where astronauts will conduct the experiment and report the findings.

The experiment is tentatively scheduled to launch from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida to the International Space Station on June 24, 2016. I believe that seeing the launch would be a life-changing educational opportunity for my students, and I want them to be there that day.

Most of my students have rarely left Brooklyn, much less traveled to another state. As a teacher, I try to inspire them to reach for the stars. This launch would be concrete proof of how far they can go. They will see firsthand what they can accomplish when they apply themselves, and they will come home knowing that they can achieve great things—because they already have.

But to make this trip, we need help. The trip from Brooklyn to the Kennedy Space Center will cost approximately $20,000, which includes air travel, ground transportation, food, and lodging for the students and chaperones. Because of the possibility of launch delays, the trip will last several days to give us the best shot of seeing the launch in person.

Would you please consider supporting these students and helping us take this trip? Any donation will help and would be greatly appreciated.

You can donate online at this site. You can also send a check made payable to PS/IS 30 PTA to the following address: 7002 4th Ave Brooklyn, NY 11209. Please write “Rocket Launch” in the memo line.

If you have any questions, please contact me at [email redacted].gov. If any surplus funds are raised, they will go to support other science initiatives at PS/IS 30 Mary White Ovington.

Thank you for investing in the lives of my students and supporting science education at PS/IS 30 Mary White Ovington.

Sincerely,
Nathan W. Tubbs
