Roy Potters MIRACLE Life Changing Story

Tax deductible
Hi All,

Thank you for visiting Roy Potters go fund me page. I am going to write his miracle story below! All the money will be donated to Harefield Hospital to say a huge thank you to them for saving my Grandads life and I hope with the donation it will help them buy more equipment to save other patients lives.

Roy is a bubbly, caring man who spent 28 years of his life working at Broadmoor as Psychiatric Nurse. He lived in Crowthorne and Binfield and now lives in Bracknell with his wife and mum who is 92 years old. He has been married for 46 years to his wife Janette and has a daughter called Suzanne and 2 Grandaughters Abby & Zoe. You may recognise photos of him from shopping at Tesco’s Martins Heron. He supports Spurs and loves his family dearly. Below is his story about what happened to him.

On Saturday 5th January 2019 he was taken into Frimley Park Hospital with chest pains. After hours of different tests they finally found out he had a tear in his aorta. Immediately he was blue lighted to Harefield Hospital. (Most people don’t make it to the hospital when this happens).

Once he arrived they took him down to surgery which he was in for 10 hours. Little did he know as they was operating on him his aorta (heart) was tearing further as they was stitching him up and had actually severed off his right artery. Even though the surgery was successful and they managed to fit a mechanical valve round his artery so the blood could feed the heart again the surgeon told us that most patients wouldn’t make it and his chances of survival was 10%-15%.

After the surgery he was in an induced coma for 19 days. He had to be put on several machines such as life support, an Echmo machine for his heart and lungs, and ventilator for his lungs (as they were failing) and put on kidney dialysis as they were failing as well. He has had a wide range of infections ontop of all this such as sepsis which is serious in its self.

We are now over a month on and he is still here despite all the odds. They put in a tracheostomy and 3 days ago they fitted it with a voicebox and he is extremely weak but we can now make small conversations with him.

He has been through an awful lot but keeps fighting every single day. He is still very very vulnerable but each day he is improving a tiny bit. He can’t stand or do things on his own right now but he has a nurse with him 24 hours per day which we couldn’t be more thankful for.

I have set up this page because one of the surgeons at Harefield Hospital told us if he had been taken anywhere else he would not of made it through the operation but due to the machines they have and the highly trained heart specialists being there they have given him a fighting chance that nowhere else could.

What happened to my Grandad could happen to anyone, there is no cause behind a tear in the aorta and with everyone’s donations I’m going to give to Harefield I hope they can save so many more amazing lives like my grandads.

I will continue to update people on how he’s doing but everyday he is alive means everything to us. We visit him everyday and appreciate all the visitors he has had and all the support and love we have been given.

I am hoping this can make some awareness to people to live your life to the fullest as you never know what’s around the corner.

**UPDATE*** Roy has now had his tracheostomy taken out and he can communicate with us normally. He has been in terrible pain due to a large cyst in his back passage the size of a grapefruit. (That was life threatening in itself due to the amount of blood loss). They have given him pints of blood to replace that.

They have put in a temporary colostomy bag to keep the area clean and he has a catheter in as well.

He can now have puréed foods and there is talk to him moving to Frimley Park Hospital in the next coming weeks. He will be in the hospital for quite a few months but each day he is improving and going in the right direction** He has now been in hospital for 9 weeks and will likely be in here for a few months before he can walk again or become stronger.

On behalf of all Roy’s family we appreciate you reading his story and appreciate any donation you can afford.

We have now also been sponsored by Harefield Hospital and have a letter of authorisation to do different fundraisers.

We have done a Tombola at Martins Heron Tesco’s which helped raise £600 for the cause. We have overachieved our target but would love to hit the 3k mark as that’s an amazing amount to of raised for the hospital.

We also have an amazing raffle with great prizes that over 30 amazing companies have donated services for that will be drawn on the 31st March.

Thank you so so so much for reading, sharing and donating. We hope this raises awareness and support for other friends and families.
