On August 21, 2016, our (respective) wife and mother, Rose Anne Murphy, died of cancer. She was very private and wouldn't let us tell anyone she was ill, which meant the news came as a terrible shock to everyone beyond the immediate family, and even for us, it was almost completely unexpected.

Mom was a dancer, learning from and then teaching with Jean McMaster at the Master Dance Studio in Kenai, Alaska. She touched the lives of hundreds of dance students over the years (two of her students named their dogs after her, because they loved her so much!), and she retained her interest in dance and the dance communities around her until her death.

So we think the best way we can honor her memory was to create a dance scholarship fund for the Encore Dance Academy in Kenai, run by Tara Phillips, one of Mom's former students.

Our immediate goal is to secure $1500: enough funds to create a three year scholarship. Our longer term goal  is to create a scholarship in perpetuity, which is possible if we can get $15,000 into our investment fund. It's a big goal, but it's not unachievable, and the idea of being able to be able to do something like that for Mom, and in her name, is part of what's holding us together right now.

The deadline for the first scholarship applications is March 15, 2017, with the recipient being chosen in May 2017 for a year's scholarship beginning in September 2017. We intend to have the 3 year funding solidly secured by February 2017, ensuring the first few years of the scholarship and freeing us to look forward to creating the perpetual fund over the next months.

I don't even know how to wrap this up. Thank you for coming to read this page, thank you for being there for us, thank you for helping us achieve our goal. We are all so grateful for your love and support, and thank you from the bottoms of our hearts.

A couple of pictures from Mom's last dance recital, "Feast On Dance," from 2015. She was the ringer, having had years of dance training amongst other people who were learning for the first time. <3 :)

We've reached our initial goal of $1500--3 years of scholarship--in just a day, and we thank you *so* much.

Our goal now is to stretch for 5, 7, 10 years--and in time, up to the self-sustaining amount of $15,000. I'm editing the goal to reflect our next milestone, which will be 5 years ($2500), and I once more thank you *so* deeply. This means the world to us.

Love,
Catie
