Help me to fund my first solo exhibition in a commercial gallery!
In June, 2016 I will be exhibiting my work at the Jonathan Ferrara Gallery, in New Orleans, LA. I will be showing a minimum of 8 boxes for this exhibition, and I must have these boxes custom-fabricated.
The development of my current work in dimensional photography has been a three-years journey, starting with a simple print on clear polyester taped to the wall. As the print curled away from the surface, I noticed that the light passing through the print cast a shadow on the wall, creating a captivating 3-D effect. From this simple and happenstance micro-event was born an entirely new way for me to create dimensional photography, and I have developed, at the urging of the director of the Jonathan Ferrara Gallery, a way to layer my images in these custom acrylic plexiglass boxes.
I plan to create a body of work building upon my own mother's idea of Mother Vision: a sort of second sight that had only to do with me, an omniscience of what I was doing when she couldn't see me, of what I was going to do that I was going to try to keep from her, of what I was thinking or feeling. I could hide nothing from her because of this mother vision. Partly I felt menaced by this claim, and partly it comforted me. The images themselves in this show are of my children in various states of play, of retreat from me, unaware of my eye but nonetheless seen.
As a work from home mother of three young children, this project means a lot to me. I am proud of the accomplishments I've been able to make despite very real constraints of time and resources. I've been encouraged to pursue this work by my many wonderful friends and my family. I need your help to make this dream a reality. Each box costs from a range of $130-$400 to produce. They must all be shipped twice. I must also purchase films and inks for the printing.
I will be dedicating this work to my friend Elisa Lardani Marchi, who lost her life giving birth to her fourth child in February 2015, and to her children, and to her spouse Luca Marchi.
