Rose & Chelsea National Competition

Donation protected
We are Chelsea Davatos and Rose Kelly, sixth graders at McKnight Middle School, in the Renton School District out of Renton, Washington (Renton being the ACTUAL home of the Seattle Seahawks!). We had the privilege of participating in this year’s National History Day Competition in the Junior Group Performance category, first, at the Regional Level, and upon winning first place in the Regionals, at the State Level.
The theme of the contest this year at National History Day, was “Taking A Stand In History”. Our project was the local story of University of Washington Art Professor Lea Miller and the stance she took in 1937-1938 against the Anti-Nepotism Policy at the University of Washington during the Great Depression. You may not have heard of this subject before, since it is a very specific and largely abandoned topic. We put in a tremendous amount of work and time in conducting our research, analyzing our topic, creating a paper, producing a script and acting out a performance.
On April 29th, 2017, we competed at the State Level in the Junior Group Performance Category, and, out of 18 entrants, we won First Place. It was unbelievable! We also won the E Clampus Vitus Award, an award given for compelling history of the American West. We were enthralled!
Winning the State Competition gives us the opportunity to compete at the National Level, taking place June 11-15, 2017, at the University of Maryland. We will be competing against the entire country, as well as other nations. Over 3000 participants are expected. We are honored and proud to be representing the State of Washington.
In order to reach the objective of competing next month, we are hoping to raise $3000 by June 1, 2017 to help defray the costs of this once-in-a-lifetime experience.
We would be honored if you would partner with us on this journey.  Any amount donated would be appreciated, as well as words of encouragement.

Thank-you for your support.

Sincerely,
Chelsea Davatos & Rose Kelly
