Roscoe's Medical Care Fund

Donation protected
Roscoe is a 4 year old Great Pyrenees who lived in Morristown, Indiana and was shot by his owner May 28th, the day he was moving out of his rental property. Roscoe is a livestock guardian who guarded sheep, was never given any medical care or human attention. He does not even know his name. The sheep were sold, and Roscoe's entire world was turned upside down. Fortunately it was not a fatal shot, but he ran off with the threat of his owner saying he would "finish him off" if he came back. He was injured and has been avoiding any contact with people since he was shot. He took up residence in a barn about a mile down the road from his original home.

We were contacted by FIDO Lost Dog Recovery program to see if we would take him into rescue if he was able to be caught. FIDO (Friends of Indianapolis Dogs Outside) is a local dog advocate group who does not rehome dogs, but helps catch lost ones, and provide shelter, food and water for dogs people keep outside. FIDO Lost Dog Recovery volunteer, Angela Notter List, engaged the community of Morristown, set up a large live trap, and got volunteers to bait the trap each day and watch out for Roscoe. She had one person who is a butcher bringing him very tasty meat to get him to trust going in the trap.

After 10 days, finally last night about 10:30 PM, he entered the trap and triggered the door. He was transported in a kennel, that a local farmer used his front loader to lift into the back of Angela's truck, and taken to Veterinary Specialty and Emergency Care, here in Indianapolis, where he was treated by Dr. May, and is now under the care of Dr. Kent Stauffer. He is going to be hospitalized until Monday, and is requiring daily treatment for his gun shot, and is on IV antibiotics. Fortunately, the bullet exited and so he will not require surgery to remove it, but he does have a terrible infection from it, and he is heartworm positive too. We anticipate that his medical care will be about $4000. One of the residents of Morristown, also set up a gofundme page for him and has raised $580 for his care.

Those of you who know us, know we are a small privately funded rescue who provides care for the Great Pyrenees in need from donations and adoption fees. We have already treated three dogs for heartworm this year, and have two more plus Roscoe, requiring treatment. It costs about $800 per dog for us to treat them for heartworm.

If you would like to foster or adopt Roscoe, the applications are on our website, www.igpr.org.
