Roof for Frances Jones House

Donation protected
The Frances Jones House is an icon of Daufuskie Island. Miss Frances was a leader of the island and my teacher and mentor. As an 6th generation native of Daufuskie, I am so fortunate to have the opportunity to come back to the Island I called home during my childhood, and thanks to the Johnson Family and Preservation SC, this house is where I stay when on the island. It is an honor to be able to live in such an important place that honors Frances Jones' legacy.

The House was originally constructed shortly after the Civil War  as a small one room house constructed by Ms Frances' Great Grandparents after freedom came.  The House was expanded to its current size in the early 20th century by Ms Frances after she received it from her grandparents. It is from here that Ms Frances helped to raise the funds to build the Mary Field School and taught the children of Daufuskie for almost 30 years, leaving an impact on Daufuskie's gullah community that still resonates to this day.

The Roof is in desperate need of replacement as the original tin has worn thin and pinhole leaks are destroying parts of the ceiling inside.

We have budgeted $10,000 to replace the whole roof and repair the internal woodwork that has deteriorated. Preservation SC, a statewide non profit will be managing the funds and the roof repair. Any funds received over those needed for this project will be held by Preservation South Carolina to help other Gullah Built Homes on the Island. All funds received will be tax deductible to the fullest extent of the law.

We need the funds as soon as possible so we can get the roof repaired before the end of summer. We have a professional contractor who is ready to begin as soon as the funds are in hand.

This house has been used by the press both far and wide as representative of Daufuskie's gullah history, featured in Southern Living and The Washington Post.

Thank you for your help in not only keeping this community icon standing, but giving me a dry place to call home.!
