Roflow Medical Fund

One of the hallmarks of McNicholas High School and its families and alumni is the spirit of community. McNicholas is widely known for coming together to help members of its family in times of need. One of McNicholas’ best-loved teachers and his talented and accomplished wife need our help.

Denise and Sam Roflow were classmates at McNicholas High School. Denise was Mardi Gras Queen in 1974, and Sam was a standout baseball player, going on to play baseball for Xavier University. Denise and Sam married in 1980 and had two children Josh and Jessica.  Denise became the first family nurse practitioner in the Cincinnati Health Department while Sam initially began a career in business. Sam realized his calling was in the classroom and returned to school with Denise’s full support and blessing to become an educator. Sam is celebrating 30 years in Catholic education this year, the last 19 at McNicholas. Denise was a compassionate nurse throughout her 35-year career serving those in need. She retired last year.

Denise has faced some health challenges throughout her life.  When she was in her twenties, she fought off a brain tumor, and now some of the treatment for that brain tumor is thought to have caused some degenerative neurological and muscular problems for her. Denise had a series of falls in November and has been in care and rehabilitation for both the falls and the neurological issues. She and Sam are looking forward to becoming grandparents when Jessica '05 and her husband Matt Woebkenberg  '04 welcome a child in late January and to celebrating the addition of another Roflow when Josh '04 and his fiancée Naomi marry this spring.

The uncertainty and unpredictability of Denise’s health present Sam and Denise with the unenviable challenge of trying to plan for care and rehabilitation. There are many needs to be addressed, some covered by insurance, others, like transportation to and from doctors’ offices and medical facilities, that are not covered. When Denise returns home, she will need at least ten hours of care each day, a daily expense of at least $250.  Again, with the uncertainty of her recovery and prognosis, they cannot predict how long that care will be needed.

Members of the McNicholas community have been asking how they can help Sam and Denise, people living by values that they learned at Rocket High and that Sam has instilled in hundreds of students who have had him for theology and as their Service Club leader in the last nearly 20 years. The Roflows are unspeakably grateful for the kindness and generosity already bestowed upon them and humbled by those reaching out to do more.

All gifts will go directly to Denise’s medical expenses. The Rolfow Family and McNicholas High School thank you for your help.

Once a Rocket, always a Rocket.
