ROCÍO Film Scholarship and Cancer Fund
In 2014, Rocío Guerrero and her son, Darío, self deported themselves to Mexico in search of a miracle. Rocío had terminal cancer. She had immigrated to the United States in the 90s with Darío and his father, and together they had overstayed their visas. Now, seemingly at the height of their lives, with a happy family of five and Darío a junior at Harvard, Rocío had been told she had weeks to live. The family was devastated, but they would not surrender. She and Darío took a leap of faith and left their lives in the States. The rest of their journey is documented in the film ROCÍO .
Although Rocío is no longer with us, her memory lives on through the Rocío Film Scholarship Program. Started in early 2019, the program helps undocumented students pay for their education. This is a small thanks we can give the community we come from.
