Rob Hemming, a sailor from Britannia Yacht Club, surprised virtually everyone and maybe even himself, with his 2nd place finish in a very competitive field of world class sailors at the US Finn National Championships held at the San Diego Yacht Club September 17-20th 2015. Results:

Rob has an outside chance at representing Canada next August at the 2016 Rio Olympics. The last time Britannia Yacht Club was represented at the Olympics was by Shona Moss at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, where she placed a very respectable 15th in the Europa. Rob Woodbury was selected to represent Canada in Finn's at the 1980 Moscow games but was unable to compete for a medal because Canada withdrew, for political reasons. Club Silver Sail coach Paul Thomson represented Canada in the Soling in the 1998 & 1992 summer olympics.

Inspired by Rob's US Nationals result the Laser Master sailors from Britannia Yacht Club have put this platform together to support Rob's dream of making the Olympics. The "Road to Rio" campaign consists of three important regattas and training time.

The first $5,500 of this campaign was used for the Miami OCR (Olympic Class Regatta) in January which covered a new sail, race entry, rigging, flight and accommodation. Special thanks to Paul Phelan for lending his Finn in Miami which saved US $3,500.
Rob's summary report on this regatta can be found in the Updates section under “Show More” just above. None of the Canadians impressed enough to win the Olympic spot so it remains open.

The campaign now moves to Europe with two important regattas on the schedule. The first is to compete in the Princess Sofia Trophy regatta in Palma Mallorca, Spain in March. The Canadian hopefuls will be competing in this event and therefore it is imperative for Rob to be there to build his case. Then it's off to Italy for the Gold Cup (World Championships) in early May. The Olympic selection will most likely be decided on the results from this regatta. The top Canadian that finishes inside the top 25 will likely represent Canada in Rio but a top 16 finish would probably guarantee a spot.

It is estimated that the European campaign will cost approx. $13,000 or $6,500 per regatta for flight, Finn charter, accomodation, entry, etc. The focus will be first on raising $6,500 to reach Palma, then if successful the final $6,500 for the worlds in Italy. The poor Canadian dollar is not helping!

Bill Fuller, Chris Klotz, John Brooman and a group of Master sailors will administer the funds and provide them to Rob on an as needed bases. If there are any left over funds remaining at the end of the campaign they will be returned to the donors on an equal basis or donated as an option to the Collin Blandy Olympic Fund.

Rob is a great sailor and it will take the full support of a yacht club and sailors from the area to realize the Olympic dream. It's a once in a lifetime shot. Lets do what we can to help.
