Robert was memorialized quite nicely at last week's Gessler awards. He will live on in our memories and also for the future recipients of the Robert Johnson Lifetime Achievement Award. We are going to close this GoFundMe in a few days so any final donations are most appreciated. Thank you to everybody who has donated, reposted on Facebook or other social media, or just kept Robert in your hearts.

From Dan Kuperberg:

Dear all,

We will be having a service celebrating Robert's life next Sunday, October 21, at 4:00 pm at The Colony Theater, 555 N. Third St., Burbank.

Please dress casually and comfortably.

There is free parking at the Burbank Town Center Mall.

Scott wants us to laugh and smile as we think of Robert. Let's use this service not to mourn our tremendous loss, but to remember, honor and really celebrate a good person and a great friend.

Dan

Robert "Robbie" Johnson passed away this morning.  This GoFundMe campaign was one of hope, looking for a future where Robert was well again.  Sadly, that did not come to pass.  The family is now dealing with its grief and looking at a future without Robert.  This GoFundMe campaign will continue.  The family is most appreciative of the outpouring of sentiment and generosity.  The GoFundMe campaign is going to remain in order to create a viable college fund for Chuckie and Gabriel.    I am going to keep the original text, below, so that you can get a glimpse of what a fine man Robert has been.  He has been a dedicated Public Defender, a devoted spouse, and an amazing father.  Please keep Robert and his family in your hearts.

Original text:

Robert "Robbie" Johnson is a vibrant man, dedicated Public Defender, amazing father and spouse, who has been seriously hobbled by a mosquito bearing the West Nile Virus.  The virus has caused encephalitis and "flaccid paralysis,” meaning he is generally unable to move or speak. It is amazing and terrible that a bite from a tiny mosquito can put a person into a semi-vegetative state.  Robert was hospitalized on September 5, 2018 and transferred to a long-term acute care facility on October 3. So far, progress has been measured in very small ways.

This campaign is to assist Robert’s husband, Scott Montgomery, provide for additional medical attention to supplement Robert’s care and other needs related to Robert’s illness and to help provide for the family.

Robert has been a Deputy Public Defender for almost 24 years. He’s  worked on some of the most challenging death penalty cases our Office has handled.  His exemplary work on the Shim case helped earn him the prestigious Gessler Award in 2015.  Robert is a wonderful dad and a caring spouse.  He is truly an amazing, yet humble, man.

Robert’s friends and family will want to contribute to insure that Robert is receiving the best medical support, 24/7, as needed. This is the best way we can send our love to Robert, Scott, and their sons, Gabriel and Chuckie.
