Roane County is a water community. There are rivers, lakes, ponds and streams in every part of our county. Being a water community comes with the responsibility to educate our citizens on water safety. According to the Centers for Disease Control, kids ages 1 to 4 have the highest drowning rates. In Tennessee in 2014, 69 people drowned, including 15 children. Roane aquatics would like to give the chance for every child in Roane County to learn how to swim and to become strong swimmers. By offering year round lessons, more children could participate and develop their water safety skills.
While swimming skills for children is extremely important, they would not be the only group benefiting from year round pool access. During winter months, lake activities dwindle and an indoor facility would flourish. We would be able give every family the opportunity to enjoy water based activities year round and participate in activities that will improve their quality of life. Activities such as; water aerobics, water zumba, lap swim, family swim, birthday parties, canoeing lessons, lifeguarding classes, youth & adult competitive swimming, youth and adult swimming lessons, physical therapy, etc., offers something for every demographic in our county, from infant to seniors.
Currently the two outdoor pools in Roane County are closed from early August until late May, leaving them unused for about ten months each year. Residents who wish to participate in indoor aquatic activities must travel to Knoxville, Crossville, Oak Ridge, or Maryville and pay to use their facilities. Roane State Community College teaches their aquatics classes in other counties as well. All of this gives revenue to other counties and their pools when it could be supporting our own.
Our current objectives are:
• Short term-Fundraise money to enclose and update one of the existing pools in Roane County to jump start a year round aquatics program.
o Create a plan for operation and maintenance for the indoor facility.
• Long term- Develop a multi-community state of the art aquatics center with multiple bodies of water (therapy pool, kiddy pool, competitive pool, diving well) to be located near Roane State Community College, and to be shared by numerous community/city organizations.
