RIGGING To AUSTRALIA

WHAT?
I shall be helping to crew a 70ft yacht, UNICEF, 20,000 miles to Western Australia, via South America and South Africa, as part of the Clipper 2019-20 Round the World Yacht Race. https://www.youtube.com/user/ClipperRTW . With minimal sailing experience, I'm fulfilling a lifelong fantasy ... tackling the bamboozles of bowlines, fore-guys and running backstays; the tensions of race competition, crewmate relationships and technical dominion; and prospectively days on end of wet discomfort, riding a bronco in a washing machine at a 45° angle

To track my progress in the race, and keep up to date with the latest Clipper Race news, keep an eye on the Race Viewer. Be warned ... once the race starts it can become addictive: www.clipperroundtheworld.com/race/standings

WHEN?
August – December 2019:
Leg 1:  https://www.clipperroundtheworld.com/rce/leg/leg-1 7,250 miles;  London to Punta del Este, Uruguay [via Portomao, Portugal]
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Punta_del_Este
Leg 2: https://www.clipperroundtheworld.com/race/leg/leg-2  4,200 miles;  Punta Del Este to Capetown, South Africa https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cape_Town
Leg3: https://www.clipperroundtheworld.com/race/leg/leg-3  8,900 miles; Capetown to Freemantle, WA https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fremantle

WHY?
A challenge to kick-start my 3rd Age - transitioning from sixty years of domestic and office workplaces - New skills, disciplines and discoveries.

Above all, Clipper have realized I'm someone for whom kids everywhere, and their future, are paramount and have assigned me to UNICEF [CV31 - the first boat in their fleet].  I'm seeking your support, and your money, for this and two other vital charities which share that commitment.  Every donation will help. Thank you in advance for your contribution to these causes that mean so much to me:

UNICEF (United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund):
https://www.clipperroundtheworld.com/partnerships/team-partners/unicef-uk
https://www.unicef.org.uk/

UNICEF is amazing! There are 2.2 billion children in the world -  almost a third of the global population. It's a financially and politically independent charity,  working in 191 countries to reach the most vulnerable communities even in the remotest places. With its partners, it's vaccinating half of the world’s children;  supplying 80% of therapeutic food. In 30 years, it's halved the number of undernourished children, doubled primary school attendance, and improved the drinking water to 2.6 billion people worldwide

As I traverse the globe in the Clipper Race, I shall witness the environmental impact of climate change as well as economic, martial or political stresses and want to help ensure that every child, everywhere, has the right to a safe, happy and healthy childhood.

Antibiotic Research UK (Antruk):
https://www.antibioticresearch.org.uk/
Bacterial resistance to the world’s current antibiotics is increasing at a frightening pace locally, nationally and globally. We can't take for granted today’s antibiotic treatments because they may well be gone tomorrow.

ANTRUK is a national charity, fighting this global problem through Medical Research; Public Education; and Patient Support. Recent progress includes ...
-  Over 150,000 drug / bacteria combinations have been screened in searches for antibiotic resistance breakers to treat some of the most difficult superbugs. The nine most promising combinations now need to be developed.
-  Research grant programmes are being funded at Oxford University, Sheffield University, St Georges London, The London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, The John Radcliffe Hospital and The Royal Veterinary College.  More, bigger projects are urgently needed.
- Antruk is funding a Patient Support Officer to help people with antibiotic resistant infections. This is a vital service which needs to grow.

North Yorkshire Youth:
https://www.carltonlodge.org.uk/
https://www.nyy.org.uk/
I'm proud to be involved with this project, benefiting young people in North Yorkshire through its youth clubs across the county and Carlton Lodge Activity Centre near Thirsk. The 10-19 age group is probably the most needy of the sectors of our population who rely on the rest of us for sustenance and development, yet its share of public and charitable funds, compared to the youngest and oldest, is by far the smallest.

The Carlton Lodge Centre urgently needs funds for its buildings and facilities. Your contributions will make a vital difference.
