We are Travis and Kate, and together as Ride Along Pictures, we'll be going on and documenting adventures to build support for building better trails and streets.
Ride Along Pictures is a video production and consulting company. We are making films and other media about adventures, especially about the places where adventures take place. Kate and Travis have experience planning and going on adventures of different sorts, and we can help you plan and document your trips. We will also be available for video and consulting services like producing travel and tourism videos for regions, non-profits, and businesses.
What are we doing?
In fall 2019, we will be embarking on our inaugural adventure film project: Riding from Calais, ME to Key West, FL along the East Coast Greenway.
As we ride, we will film our trip, including the roads, trails, people, and places that we meet and experience. We will also be speaking with groups along the way to tell our story, why routes like the East Coast Greenway are important, and how people can get involved and help.
After our trip, we will be putting together a travel documentary series from what we have filmed to share how great bike touring is, how beautiful the coast is, and how grand a fully-completed East Coast Greenway trail can be. Our other goal with this series is to help bring in those people who are curious about bike touring and adventuring. It's a great way to spend time and we want to see more people outside.
Why do we need $4000?
Short answer: Mostly for safety.
We'll be on the road from September 22 to November 21, 2019. That's 60 days on the road! We will mostly be using bicycle, camping, and camera gear that we already own.
In that time, we of course need to eat, sleep, store video footage, and maintain our bicycles and gear. The budget items below include planned purchases before and during our trip.
Eat budget: $800 ($13/day) We do have to carry all of our food and will mostly have dry goods like oatmeal, peanut butter, beans, and some other camp-ready goodies.
Sleep budget: $700 ($12/day) We'll be spending nights with friends or Warmshowers hosts most nights and camping when neither are available. Most of our costs here will be camping reservations, but will also include thank you gifts for our hosts.
Video/media budget: $600 ($10/day) For storing and managing video files, we’ll be using a hard drive and laptop on the road. Nothing fancy, but we will be using a Western Digital Wireless Passport and a Google Chromebook to manage our files and media accounts. This gear will also be used on future Ride Along trips and will continue to be assets for this company.
Gear maintenance budget: $800 ($13/day) Bicycle and gear maintenance will be a little easier because Travis is a professional bicycle mechanic and we will work to make sure our bicycles are in top shape before the trip starts. We will also keep up most small fixes on our own with basic tools. With our experience on longer trips, we know to expect that we may need to visit bike shops and outfitters for larger repairs and replacements.
Trip insurance budget: $600 ($10/day) This is for a trip insurance policy to cover liability and emergencies.
Just in case budget: $500 ($8/day) This is for those just-in-case moments and to make sure that if an emergency came up, that we would be prepared for it.
This comes out to costing about $67 per day for both of us. We could absolutely travel on much less than this, but our goal is not to just have some adventure. We want to use this trip to create a documentary series to help promote the East Coast Greenway and trails in general and to help bring curious people into bike touring and adventuring.
