Ride for Kids with Disabilities

Tax deductible
Short story: I'm riding my bicycle for nine hours to celebrate turning 40 and offer thanks for the treasure of services which have been available for our son, Isaac, who struggles with a genetic disorder and cerebral palsy.

Long story: I want to invite you to celebrate my 40th birthday with me. Well, not exactly. I mean, you can come if you want, but I’m guessing by the time you're done reading this you won’t want to.

Many of you know that I have a son, Isaac, who struggles with cerebral palsy. He can’t walk independently, sometimes struggles to find his words, along with other issues. Life with Isaac has been difficult, but it has also been very positive. We have been blessed with an army of doctors, therapists, and caregivers who are all outstanding. There’s never been a treatment, piece of equipment, aide, that he’s needed and hasn’t gotten. We feel very blessed.

At the same time, I’m aware that the experience for many people with disabilities around the world is very different. I spent part of my youth as a missionary kid in Nigeria, and I’ve seen the reality of what life with a disability looks like without access to support and services. I have clear memories of children and adults reduced to begging in the streets, and those were the disabilities we saw.

My hobby is bicycling. Over the winter I train indoors using a trainer and a bicycling app known as The Sufferfest. The Sufferfest maintains a standing challenge to ride 10 of their workouts back-to-back. They call it the Knighthood, and it takes somewhere in the range of nine hours to complete. On December 1st, I will be riding the knighthood to raise funds for the Passion Center for Children. An orphanage and children’s center in Malawi that provides services both on site and in local villages for children with special needs. Our experience with a child with special needs has been very positive, and we want to give that gift to others as well.

I’m not asking that you give $10 to charity this holiday season. If you want to, great. The link is below. I’m asking this. If you believe that the services we offer to children with special needs in this country goes deeper than public policy. If your think it is a statement about who we are as a people, and the value of every human life. If you believe that is a gift you can afford to offer to others, then click the link, make a donation, learn about the Passion Center and get involved.

Like I said, I don’t think you’re very interested in stopping by my house to hang out on December 1st, but I would like you to celebrate with me.
