Ricky's brain injury recovery fund

Donation protected
My name is Jennifer and am the mother of a beautiful 3 year old boy. On April 12 2016 our world and lives changed in away I wish for no one to ever experience. My boyfriend and the father of our beautiful boy was involved in a motor vehicle accident in which he suffered a severe traumatic brain injury along with a broken neck, leg and dislocated wrist. Our Ricky was rushed into emergency brain surgery as we were told his brain was swelling so rapidly that if surgery wasnt performed he would not survive. Ricky underwent a procedure both left and right sides of his skull were removed to allow for the brain to swell and give him a chance of survival. He was placed in a medically induced coma for several days and then the medication was reduced to see if would wake up. Our Ricky remained in a coma. It is just alittle over 6 months now and Ricky is still with us. Despite the odds he fought to begin breathing on his own after day 3. He under went multiple surgeries to fix his knee and leg which healed beautifully. He fought infections and was taken off pain medications. However MRI showed that his brain was severly injured in all areas but his brain stem. Some doctors told us he wouldnt survive others told us not to give up hope. We choose not to give up as he had not given up. Ricky's surgeries were successful on his body but his brain injury has been a very slow healing process. He now is in a minimally conscious state and was transfered to long term care facility. Ricky has not given up his fight to come back to us. Life however has changed for my son and I. We have lost half of our income, and as a newly graduated student myself who has yet to find employment this along with the emotional losshas effected us greatly. Ricky's care has now platowed as we aren't able to cover the costs of medical equipment that is not covered by ohip or government funding such as a helmet that is required to protect his exposed brain on both sides. Due to this Ricky hasnt been moved from his bed or room in months. The back of his head has become flat and misformed from laying in bed so long. With this medical equipment Ricky's care and quality of life will be greatly improved. He will be able to be placed in a wheel chair and taken for walks. Being in the chair will reduce his chances on catching pneumonia, it will strengthi his body and he will be able to be stimulated in ways that will only improve his recovery and give him a fighting chance at a quality of life. This will give us some normalcy at visits cause we can take him outside where he loved to be and let the sun hit his face for the first time since April. The sooner we are able to give Ricky this equipment the sooner he is able to continue his journey of healing. It breaks my heart to see him just laying there. Ricky has a long road ahead of him and we will be fighting with him every step of the way but we as a family need some help. Anything helps and anything is appreciated from the very bottom of mine and my sons hearts. This has been like living in a nightmare and we want to give the very best we can to a man that loved us with all of his heart. Please help Ricky, because he is a man that would give the shirt off his back if it was the last one he had. Please help our family be able to make it through this knowing we did our very best to fight along side with him.
