Meet Rick Kahle ~  one of the strongest men I've ever had the pleasure of knowing.

Diagnosed with Lupus in 1992, he thought he'd just have some modifications to make to his lifestyle but this was not the case.  Five years later, 1997 brought one horrific flare up that robbed him of everything including his memory.  But he has fought back valiantly.  The 1997 flare up put him in a coma, caused paralysis, caused all sorts of residual problems and left us all believing that he had only a few days to live.  But he did live.  And he's stronger than ever now!

Although Rick is in remission now, and has been for 18 years, there are still a lot of continuing issues.  Although he's beaten his Lupus, he still has all of the after effects caused by that long, long hospital stay in 1997.  And he's been in and out of the hospital more than anyone I know.  He has since had both hips replaced and a knee replaced.  He's had back surgery twice, the last being just two weeks ago.  And his insurance is tapped out and no longer paying for the costs.  Rick remains in a rehab facility now at $150/day.  Please help this wonderful man, this very gentle soul to not have to worry about the funds for his latest recovery!

RICK IS HOME! We are ecstatic to have him home even though he came home with a nasty, nasty cold. We are working furiously to kick it out of him... but still, he's happy to be home. Midnight is thrilled, too. She's the only one who doesn't have to wear a mask. Rick doesn't need his caregivers to be sick... so mask up, we do.
Well, HE'S cute, anyway...
Didn't want her to feel left out...

Today is a big day for Rick. He is waiting on pins and needles (so are we!) to see what his next step is. He will either transfer to Plano Rehab South ... or he'll be released to my care. Or ... he'll remain at Prairie Estates. We just don't know, won't know, until Plano South decides if they'll accept him. All fingers are crossed. All toes are crossed, too. I'm stopping at the eyes, though.

So, prayer is needed for the best decision to be made. And, should you be wondering, Rick is doing very well. We had to have him "detoxed" once we found out that he was WAY over-medicated. And, it's made a world of difference. The fighting spirit has returned to Rick and he's working harder than ever to get well!

Rick has shown incredible improvement over the last 24 hours and we are so, so hopeful now of a happy ending. We (Liz and I) were able to meet with the rehab doctor and express our concerns about Rick's care and Rick's sudden decline. This dr. actually listened to us and everything is looking up. I won't bore you with the details, but we are all thrilled with the changes we are seeing. There's a new rehab plan for Rick that we'll know more about tomorrow. Prayers are welcome for the changes he's about to go through tomorrow. He wants to come home (I don't blame him) but he needs a little more time. Midnight disagrees with me...
Come Home, Daddy!

Elizabeth and I are so touched by all of the love and support we've received. We're ALL touched! We meet with Rick's doctor tomorrow for the first time since he arrived in Rehab. We are expecting results/action/good reports. And we know that this is the wrong Rehab facility for Rick so we are armed and ready for war. We still need much prayer!
This is the Rick we want back!
