Many of you have been following Richard fulfil his dream of competeting in the Dakar Rally 2019!
After many ups and downs but an amazing effort and achievement devastating news came on stage 9 when he was involved in a bad crash resulting in a fractured pelvis, hips and 2 vertebrae along with worrying internal bleeding and a nasty cut on his face. The internal bleeding has now been resolved after rods were inserted to stabilise. He remains in hospital in Peru and will have further surgery on Monday to have screws and plates fitted to secure the fractures and then bed rest for at least 10days before being able to fly home. Once home the recovery time can be up to 10months!
Some generous dedicated sponsors, lifelong friends and supporters enabled Richard to fulfil his dream to get to the Dakar but a lot of it was also funded by himself.
The total credit card fuel cost used from his bike and the support van is estimated £200 a day totalling at £2000! With also the cost to pick the bike and van up from LeHarve where it will be shipped back to.
He was hoping before he went he would be able to get people to “sponsor a stage” but did not have time to develop the idea!
With Richard now being unable to work for a good few months when he comes back and Jo taking time off also to fly out to be with him we hope that this may be something people will be able to help with to take one less stress off the situation!
