NATIONAL HANDWRITING CRISIS

HANDWRITING IS GOOD FOR OUR BRAINS...HELP SAVE IT.

WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT?

The Problem: Writing instruments have fallen out of favor as gifts and for personal use largely due to the digital craze. Most schools have abandoned teaching handwriting beyond block letters and not at all above 3rd or 4th grade levels.

Many young adults, teens and children cannot read notes, letters or documents written in cursive. Increasingly, the attention span of children is getting shorter and shorter and there is a higher incidence of Attention Deficit Syndrome diagnoses.

Handwriting has already been eclipsed by keyboarding. Handwriting instruction in has been reduced to the lower grades and to the least amount of academic time possible.

Yet, it is well understood that writing by hand increases learning and reading skills, including comprehension and composition. Early and frequent handwriting aides the brain with letter recognition leading to better reading abilities.

Many scientific research studies, some employing MRIs of brain activity, have already proven that taking notes while writing by hand is far superior to keyboarding. The MRI results demonstrate increased brain activity with handwriting that reinforces learning, while keyboarding generally does not.

Answer: Place more emphasis on handwriting academically and socially for all age levels. Promote and preserve handwriting for future generations. Secondarily, promote better and faster learning through early and continuous handwriting use.

Solution: Create greater awareness of the problems and potential solutions of our educational crisis in which handwriting is at its center.

Proposal: To created greater awareness, develop public events sponsored by every entity in the writing instruments chain, from manufacturers to consumers, including distributors, retailers and other businesses that employ workers in the pen community.

Public Events: The events would create opportunities for public guests to see handwriting demonstrations, attend seminars and test their handwriting with a variety of writing instruments.

Where: Major cities in the US. Launch cities could include Boston, MA, New York, NY, Washington D.C., Philadelphia, PA, Chicago, IL, Houston, TX, and Los Angeles, Ca.

When: 2020 and beyond, exact dates and cities TBD

Participants: The public, writing equipment manufacturers and their associations, specialty pen retailers, and writing paper and desk accessories businesses.

Plan for GoFundMe fund raising: Funds will be used to book convention space and to hire a public relations firm.
