As a union we always talk about giving back and showing support to the community through our committees and outreach programs. In the past we have struggled with using our communication tools for personal membership issues. No more. On November 9th retired Local President Ed Odenwald and his wife Carol Ann lost their home they built by hand some 50 years ago and everything in it to a devastating fire.
Most of our members are too young or new to remember Ed’s time of service to this Local. Ed started as a Laboratory Technician before transitioning to the Plant Committee where he served for 25 years (1974-1999). During that time, he held multiple officer positions, Financial Secretary and Treasurer among them. He quickly earned a reputation as a fighter for what was right. He was a vocal and passionate advocate for membership who took part in seven contract negotiations.
In 1999 Ed was elected President of PACE Local 2-86 as we were then known. Ed was front and center for the negotiations that led to the funding and founding of our union getting a self-insured Medical Program. He stepped down in 2003. We hesitate on using the word retired. Ed continues to work and serve the Local’s retirees as they struggle to understand the ins and outs of the ever-changing insurance coverage landscape.
If there was any time or anyone we wanted to start with lending a helping hand to it would be Ed Odenwald as he has reached many a member far and wide with his willingness to help. We always say as a union “I call you my Brother and Sister because we are family” so let’s show Ed and Carol Ann how much that’s statement rings true today.
