Help Retrieve Abby Sunderland’s Boat Wild Eyes!
Did you hear the amazing news that Abby Sunderland’s sailboat, Wild Eyes, has been spotted drifting off the southern coast of Australia for the first time since 2010?
If you aren’t familiar with Lucky Kat World, we’re an edutainment company that encourages good character development through games, videos and fun activities. Abby’s Adventures was an early feature on the Lucky Kat website. Our entire team was anxious to read her daily posts! We were all disappointed when her adventure came to a sudden end with the rogue wave that disabled her boat. Our main concern at Lucky Kat was that Abby made it home safely, but we did speculate and wonder what would come of Wild Eyes. I don’t think any of us thought it would be over 8 years later!
After seeing the news, we reached out to Abby’s father. He was his warm and friendly self but also very reserved. I think we were more animated and excited than he was! The Lucky Kat team immediately asked how we could help them retrieve her vessel. While it’s doubtful any of the video equipment that was abandoned with the boat survived all these years, wouldn’t it make a phenomenal story if by some miracle, some of it did survive?!
When we asked Abby’s dad how much something like this would cost, he quietly said he’d have to crunch the numbers. When we suggested a GoFundMe campaign, he was very hesitant and wasn’t comfortable asking for people to help fund the effort. In speaking further with the Sunderlands, they of course acknowledged that the boat has historical and sentimental value and retrieving her would eliminate any environmental and navigational hazards.
It took some coaxing, but the Sunderlands agreed to our setting up a GoFundMe campaign to help them try and bring her back.
Whether you were a part the original Team Abby or not, Wild Eyes being spotted is truly amazing news!
