Have you ever had a dream? I mean, a really big dream? A dream so big it kind of scares you?
My really big dream is to rescue a piece of our local history, a 2,400 square foot piece of history.
The 1924 historic building located at 44711 East North Bend Way in North Bend, Washington is going to be torn down.
The current owner, Tanner Electric Cooperative, needs to clear the site in order to build a new substation so they can continue to serve their community.
This is where I began to dare to dream big.
I am just a regular person. I have lived in North Bend for 30 years, raised my wonderful family here. I have seen a lot of changes to our town. We are developing so quickly.
I worried. What was being done to preserve and protect the final remaining threads of our historical story? Our rich history of lumber and railroads?
This historic building was home to the North Bend Timber Company. It was used for their office and workshop. This building saw a past where everyone worked "in the woods"; trees were easily 5-7 feet in diameter; and railroads connected North Bend to the world.
Now the world is at our doorstep. With so much development, we are losing our past, our character, our town vibe.
This little 2,400 sq. ft. building may not look like much with its sagging and weathered exterior but it once was a vital and thriving part of North Bend's character and economy.

My really big dream? Rescue our past!
Phase One: Move this historic remnant of North Bend's past. My family owns a 2-acre property just a mile away. Many developers have wanted to purchase this property to build housing. I want more for this piece of property. I want this land to serve our community.
Phase Two: Rebuild the building to be historically accurate while incorporating safety and current building codes. Apply for historic landmark status.
Phase Three: Use the historic building as a creation space. Everyone should have the opportunity to explore and create art whether it is traditional art such as ceramics and painting, or industrial art such as glass-blowing, iron work, and woodworking.
Fundraising will happen for Phase One: Move it from August 20 - September 30, 2018. Our goal is $75,000. This will pay for photographing and cataloging each piece of the building; disassembling the roof in one piece, carefully preserving and removing the walls in large pieces in order to move everything.
Phase Two: Rebuild it will be from October 1 - April 30, 2019. This will be the most time-consuming and complicated part of the process. We need to prepare the ground, build a structurally sound framework, then carefully piece back together the original walls, windows, doors, and roof. Our goal is $337,000.
Fundraising for Phase Three: Use it will begin May 1, 2019. Once the building is in place, we can begin to raise funds to purchase equipment such as kilns, tables, clay, glazes, pottery wheels, easels, paints, brushes.
To make this big, audacious dream come true, I formed a non-profit, North Bend Art and Industry. I am gathering a dream team of architects and builders and artists. Other big dreamers are signing on for the board of directors to oversee this project. Our non-profit status is currently pending.
