Jasmine's Story

Hello.  My name is Jasmine and I am a 30 year old mother of two young boys.  We live in rural Oregon with my fiancé.  On February 4th, 2015 I was diagnosed with a pineal region teratoma (a brain tumor). This kind of tumor is extremely difficult to operate on because it is in the center, underside of my brain.   On top of that, in March of 2018 I was diagnosed with severe gastroparesis.

For the past 4 years I have suffered from severe headaches, dizziness, lost eyesight, regular seizures, incessant vomiting (I throw up between 30-50, times every single day), and drastic weight loss. Along with several other side effects from these symptoms, including going into cardiac arrest, and hyperglycemic comas.  I now receive 100% of my nutrition, and hydration enternally.

On top of the physical toll, there is a mental toll as well. I have fallen into spells of severe depression, and I suffer from mood swings and feelings of hopelessness. I am incredibly fortunate to have an amazing support system from my fiancé, friends, and family that have been able to help keep me fighting, but it hasn't been easy for any of us.

At the end of 2016, my symptoms became almost intolerable.  I was forced to retire from the career I loved, and move from the house I lived in as an employee of the USFWS.  My, now fiancé, Daniel, moved in with me and my children in February of 2017.  We have spent the last 2 years fighting not only my tumor, but the extremely devastating, incurable disease, gastroparesis.

Medical expenses in any case are astronomical.  They are made much worse by my rural location.  The specialty care I require, along with travel expenses is often overwhelming.  I was recently informed that my healthcare coverage (received by the government) had lapsed, and I will lose all services.  Any and all support is appreciated more than I could ever show.

Thank you for reading my story!

Jasmine

Hey everyone. I’ve had a good week this week, the first in awhile. I gained almost 4 pounds, woohoo! I head back down to Davis at the end of the month for a new MRI, and to meet with my nutritionist and GI doctor. I had labs drawn last week and they were looking much better, so I’m keeping my fingers crossed that they are good when I meet with my nutritionist again. A lot of you are friends of mine on Facebook, and it was recently brought to my attention that it seems irresponsible to be buying cows when I’m struggling to make everyday ends meet. Dan and I discussed extensively, and researched our decision. We purchased the cows for a number of reasons, and also, for $10/each. It has been almost a year since I have been able to work. This past year we struggled to provide meat at our table. The biggest reason for purchasing 2 of the cows was to ensure that next winter, we have meat to feed our family. Initially we planned on only purchasing 2, then we had a friend ask if we’d be interested in making them a deal for the raising of a cow for them to butcher. In our minds this is a way of making money. After that conversation, we decided to purchase 1 more in hopes of finding another person interested in making a similar deal. This was a decision that has long term benefits for our family. I very much appreciate all the support we have received, and will assure you that any funds I received through my supporters has been used strictly for medical, and travel expenses to and from medical appointments. I hope this alleviates some of the insecurities you may have with how your donation is being used. I am forever grateful for all the support!

Last week at Davis I met with my neurosurgeon. I’ve spent the last 3 months seeing several specialists, and undergoing numerous tests trying to get my body healthier so we could schedule my surgery. While I am doing better, it has been a very hard, slow process. I was feeling confident though, as I was able to gain 6lbs, and keep most liquids down for significantly longer than I had been. Unfortunately, I am still not quite there. My neurosurgeon feels the risks of me not coming out of it are just too high right now. This decision has been incredibly challenging for the past week. My mind and attitude are suffering, and I’ve had an overwhelming abundance of random crying episodes. The day we came home was also my boys’s Christmas program. I dressed up, put make up on (something I rarely do anymore), I was set on being strong, and keeping my chin up. It took all of about 15minutes before tears just started streaming down my face, uncontrollably. That’s what this entire week has been like. As we head back to Davis today to meet with my GI and nutritionist I am reminding myself that I have an awesome team of doctors who are doing everything they can for me, and although sometimes I don’t want to hear what they have to say, or I get upset with them and question their decisions, they know what they’re doing and and I need to trust that. I very much appreciate all your support. On days I feel like giving up, it is you guys that I remain strong for. Knowing how many people are right there beside me on this journey reminds me that it’s worth the fight.

Happy December! I can’t believe Christmas is just a couple weeks away. We have been enjoying the holiday spirit. A week from today I head back to Davis to (finger’s crossed) schedule my surgery! This is the first of 3 trips this month. I have been doing better the past couple weeks. My heart has been fairly stable, and I am able to keep most liquids down which has allowed me to gain 4.6 pounds! A lot weighs on this next appointment, and although I’m feeling very hopeful for this trip, please continue sending positive thoughts, energy, and prayers. Thank you all for your continued support. Have a very Merry Christmas, and all my wishes for 2018 to be your best year yet!
