Dear Friends and Family,
As you all know, Hurricane Harvey has wreaked havoc over most of the Houston area, devastating homes and livelihoods of thousands.
And unfortunately, despite our physical distance from Texas, it has struck very close to home for us! The Atteberry sons Dwight, Ty, Kyle and Kent (and their families) are humbly requesting your support for our cherished parents/in-laws, Dave and Lois Atteberry.
This morning, 8/29/2017, Dave and Lois Atteberry, had to be rescued from their home in Kingwood, Tx. (just Northeast of Houston) with just the clothes on their backs and what they could carry in their arms. As water flooded into their house from all sides, they said that watching the water come into their home and being unable to stop it was the most helpless feeling they’ve ever had. When they left their home, the water inside was already a foot deep and it was still rising. They tried to get as much up off the floor as they could, but at ages 70 and 72 (and with Dave having just had a shoulder replaced) there was only so much that they could physically do. With broken hearts, they helplessly waited for assistance while 50 years of a life together became a soggy and unsalvageable mess.
We are thankful that they are now safe and dry, having been evacuated by a Tennessee rescue squad operating a zodiac. (Thank you, Tennessee!)
Unfortunately, we anticipate that everything from the waist down will need to be ripped out and replaced. This includes but is not limited to furniture, kitchen cabinets, appliances, drywall, insulation, baseboards, interior doors, flooring, and their only car. The prospect of restoring their home is an overwhelming thought in and of itself in addition to the fact that they are on a fixed/retirement income. And to make matters worse, they did not have flood insurance, but they have us! This is where we can band together and help this wonderful couple in their greatest hour of need! We estimate it will take about $35,000 to make their home livable again.
