Reed's Journey To Remission

Donation protected
Aloha everyone!

My name is Erin and I am Reed's older sister.

I thought that practicing an active lifestyle he would live a long healthy life. We did not expect to hear this heart-breaking news of what our baby brother (Reed) is about to endure. I thought that he would graduate this fall 2019 along with aspirations of pursuing a career in the IT field, but that is now on hold as he’s been diagnosed with an aggressive form of Leukemia. My family is no stranger to Cancer as our own Father succumbed to Stomach Cancer back in 1993. My family and I are heartbroken having to experience this again (26 years later) and now we’re on a race against time.

My brother who is only 32 years of age experienced his first symptoms on February 2, 2019. Reed went to Urgent Care because of a muscle strain he began to experience along his right chest/right ribs which he thought was to be weight lifting related. Mysterious bruising and (Petechiae) also appeared on his arms, abdomen and his right leg. A CBC test from DLS resulted in Reed being admitted to the Queens West ER on 2/3/2019 due to a low platelet count of 9,000. A bone marrow biopsy was performed shortly after at Hawaii Cancer Care and 6 days later (2/8/19) we learned that he was diagnosed with, Positive Philadelphia Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (PH+ ALL).

Reed began Chemotherapy treatment on 2/13/19 at the Queen’s Medical Center Cancer Unit (Oahu, Hawaii). Reed’s Hematologist, Dr. Jon Fukumoto informed us this regimen would be an on-going 8 cycles of Chemotherapy every 3 weeks. However, this has now all changed as Reed’s Hematologist recently advised that the next best option for a higher survival rate is to move forward with a bone marrow transplant, which will take place at Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (SCCA) as Hawaii alone does not have the facilities nor the capabilities to perform a bone marrow transplant. It is expected that this process will put Reed out in Seattle for 3-4 months of treatment.

I never thought that I would be using a forum such as this nor did I expect to be putting our family concerns out here to the public. We are humbly asking for any assistance that can be provided. Your generosity, support, and blessings are greatly appreciated. Upon achieving remission, my baby brother, Reed, hopes to carry on the Nacorda bloodline in the future, as well, as achieving his associate degree in ICS in emphasis as a Network Support Specialist. He is in great spirits and fighting every day!

“Heart strong, mind right” is his motto.

With much love,
Erin
