This GoFundMe was created to raise money for 19 year old Ayla who was in a freak accident/fire explosion that caused 2nd degree burns to both her legs. She will be off work unpaid for at least 2 weeks and possibly up to 4. This is to raise money for her rent, bills, and to fix the damage to the ceiling of her bathroom. Read her story below x
This is a crazy story of a freak accident that the fire fighters have never seen this happen in 28 years, and the police said it’s a one in a million, and investigators have said we accidentally created the perfect storm and it would be almost impossible to recreate.
So last Wednesday there was a fire/explosion in our bathroom in our apartment and this is how it happened.
My boyfriend and I were having a bath. We lit a tea light candle next to the sink and I removed everything from around the sink and put it in the cupboard underneath, avoiding fire hazards. I also turned off the light (which was the fan as well, making it extremely hot in our small bathroom with the hot water and our body heat). Unbeknownst to us, a deodorant can had accidentally gotten jammed horizontally under our sink in our bathroom cupboard which left it continuously spraying the whole time we were in the bath. We did not hear this because of the running water that was still filling the bath.
All of that gas from the can set low on the floor, and with the light and fan off the room was filled with hot air. 10 minutes pass by and my cat Winter was meowling persistently outside the door. I ignored her thinking she would stop but she didn’t, so I got out of the bath, wrapped a towel around me, and planned to open the door and move her to another room. When I got up and opened the door that was enough airflow for the oxygen and gas to mix and create an explosion along with the ignited candle.
The entire bathroom lit up, the ceiling exploded, metal bars bent, it was incredibly loud and the feeling of that heat was indescribable. We ran out as fast as we could and I called an ambulance. I spent the next 3 hours in absolute agony with 2nd degree burns covering both my legs. 2nd degree burns are actually far more painful than 3rd degree burns as the nerves aren’t damaged so you feel everything.
My boyfriend wasn’t near the door so he didn’t have any injuries thank god. My cat has got burnt fur and burnt whiskers but our neighbors took her to emergency vet and she has no internal damage, my baby is shaken up but will recover.
After sitting in our neighbours bath with running water on me while I waited for paramedics, I was rushed to the hospital and given ketamine, the green whistle, oxycodon and other pain meds. Home now, I am off work for 2-4 weeks unpaid, and I am in agony every time I move my legs. I have to get up once an hour and I have physio exercises to do. If I don’t do them my muscles will heal wrong.
There’s a 50/50 chance I’ll need skin grafting to fix my legs. It depends on if the burns deepen or get infected or not.
What terrifies me is if winter didn’t meowl and if I didn’t get out of the bath to move her, we would’ve stayed in there for 20, maybe even 30 minutes and there would’ve been far more gas from the deodorant can which would’ve caused a far bigger explosion, one we most likely wouldn’t have escaped from it. I definitely know now that she was meowling because of the smell and to warn us ❤️ Moments like this really show just how fragile life is...This is what can happen accidentally with a few harmless everyday products when mixed together in the wrong way. It’s going to take me weeks to recover physically and who knows how long to mentally recover. At this stage I’m too scared to go into our bathroom and sounds that sound like smoke detectors and lights that look like fire set me off. I wouldn’t wish this upon anyone.
