Rebuild/Recovery/Restoration Relief

$5,790 of $5,000 goal

Raised by 24 people in 18 months
Everyone is aware of the enormous damage incurred by Houston, Rockport, Beaumont and other Texas communities during Hurricane Harvey. What most folks are not aware of though, is how desperate the tiny Texas towns in and around SE Texas are for assistance.  The water is (mostly) gone, but now the agonizing work of recovery and rebuilding begins.  Flood victims are in critical need for donations to aid in their clean up and restoration efforts.  There are thousands of people flooded and without insurance of any kind.  Very few building supplies are to be found in these areas.

I am a Texan girl, born and raised, and am overwhelmed by the loss and destruction created by Hurricane Harry in this great place.  Although I live in Austin, I have very good friends, family, and professional relationships with people who have been directly and devastatingly affected by this situation.  It is through my relationships with these folks that I have become excrutiatingly aware of the need, particularly in the town of Vidor and surrounding communities.

We are actively and aggressively arranging for rebuilding and restoration materials for these folks who have little support and no access to the supplies needed to clean up and put their homes back together.  Bringing in building supplies from Austin, where they are still readily available, is one option to quickly get the relief to the right people, who are desperate for help.

We are collecting funds to purchase and deliver:

Sheetrock Mud
R13 Insulation
Sheetrock Screws
Hardy Board
Tools: Hammers, Saws, Crowbars, Scissors, Drills
Extension Cords
Work Boots
Mold Killer/Bleach
All Purpose Cleaner and Rags/Mops/Scrubbers
Anything else that can be used in these efforts...

Items on this list will be purchased, by me, Robin Jackson, locally in Austin and loaded into a Uhaul truck.  We are also accepting "on the ground" donations from any individuals wanting to go that route.  After our truck is full, probably Monday or Tuesday of next week,  we will deliver directly to the fine folks at the East Gate Pentecostal Church in Vidor, Texas. They did not flood and have been doing a fantastic job of supply distribution. They have the ability to receive our materials and the manpower to unload and store supplies. If you desire contact information directly to the church, please message me and I can give you that information.

If you are local in ATX, and wish to donate actual goods and materials, we have a way to do that too! Just message me and I will give you info on how to proceed.  Or, check for an update later today, Friday September 8th, with directions on where to take your donated or purchased items to fill the truck.  We will use the funds to purchase the items that we seem to have the least of when it's time to head to Vidor!

My heritage runs deep in this part of Texas. My daddy hails from Port Neches/Groves, a tiny area outside of Port Arthur that was hit hard by Harvey. My mom grew up in nearby Nederland, directly across the street from the high school football stadium in a house that is likely wiped out at this point. I appreciate your consideration of helping out this very special part of our state. They need us!

(All withdrawls made from this account on GoFundMe will come directly out of the account, and will not be used as a "reimbursement."  I anticipate that these funds will underwrite the cost of the Uhaul truck, gasoline to get down there, and the cost of actual items on the list.   I will be documenting all receipts and expenditures.  Any of this documentation will be available....just ask!  :)  )

I couldn't be more proud of my friends, my community, loved ones and friends of friends who supported this campaigne. Saturday was a magical day.

Your donations materialized as 225 sheets of drywall, joint compound, tape, sheetrock screws and insulation for 4+ homes, plus the church. We took 20 box fans, 15 heavy duty extension cords, 8 boxes of contractor trash bags, 10 air mattresses, 3 giant bags of rags, and a dozen drills. Some lovely folks donated a brand new generator and 3 Dell computers with brand spanking new hard drives and flat screen monitors. All those goodies stuffed into my car and delivered bright and early Saturday to the Maplecrest Baptist Church. There were incredibly grateful, loving, and gracious people there ready to unload everything. We spent the day delivering loads of supplies to the families who needed them the most. There were lots of tears, lots of hugs, and I felt blessed to be part of it. You guys made that happen.

"Thank You" doesn't do justice to what you guys pulled off in a week.....you are angels, and you have reached a community in dire need of the blessings you provided.

Just a few images below. So many stories. So much love. Impossible to process how devastated this little town is, and how thrilled they were to see us arrive with our gifts.

The campaigne will continue for a while. There is still need in this part of Texas. Any additional funds we collect will be spent on building materials. We have partnered with McCoys Building Materials in Orange Texas, and can have deliveries brought in from there.

Hello friends!

Kind of at a loss of words to look over there on this GoFundMe dashboard and see $5,590 dollars! Simply unbelievable. You are the most caring, compassionate and loving community of people ever. Thanks to each and every one of you. I promise a more personal "thank you", as soon as I get all these goods delivered to SE Texas!

As a HUGE favor, if you would share or consider donating just one more time, tonight! I am headed tomorrow to purchase the Home Depot-ish things tomorrow. Picking up a donated, brand new, generator from a friend on Friday. Organizing it all and leaving first light on Saturday for the 5 hour drive. Your donations tonight and tomorrow morning will help me complete my shopping, knowing how much I have to put towards the "stuff".

Again, too amazed for words. Thank you, and spread this around just a little bit more, if you are so inclined!

I am SO excited!

There have been so many, unexpected, serendipitous (sp?) events this week, leading up to our donation this weekend. I have always loved the phrase, "water seeking it's own level", which seems SO inappropriate for obvious reasons. However, that rings true for the nature of things in general, and we have surely seen that in this journey of fundraising over the past week!

I had lots of ideas, starts, stops, spurts, what ifs?, etc. over the past week on the best way to help. Water (wisdom & faith) has sought its own level and delivered us to where we are now with this brave and meaningful effort. Keep reading...

Several things fell into place...I will try to remember them all.

+Uhaul guy steered me away from pods=too expensive

+my good friend, (and contractor on my own home remodel), counseled me on how to buy materials, how to pack a truck, how to keep an overly ambitious 58 year old woman from driving a 26 foot truck 5 hours to Vidor, and ultimately, how to receive awesome discounts from McCoy's Building Materials ''if you mention you are collecting supplies for Harvey relief". He then went on to donate ONE THOUSAND DOLLARS!!!!

+my sweet friend, Becki Griffin, coordinated BIG TIME on her end to evaluate highest need. We quickly realized that there were pressing options and opportunities, and we ACTED on them! That has led us to a revised donation drop site. We are now taking our building materials directly to Maple Gate Baptist Church of Vidor. They have been underwater, unable to help or accept donations, UNTIL NOW! Our trucks will be the inaugural donations to their flood relief effort. Yipppppeeee!

+in many pow-wow sessions with Mark, we decided the better way to BUY materials, and get the best for our investment, was to search and find a source CLOSER to Vidor, saving money on trucks and gas from Austin. That led to great things....

+today, after researching the five closest McCoys geographically to Vidor, I came up with two within 100 miles, maybe/hopefully far enough away from major devastation to still have supplies on hand. Just for grins, I first dialed the McCoys in Orange, Tx. 19 miles away. Surely they have nothing at this point. Right?

+WRONG! They had received a replenishment supply of drywall just today, just before I called. I got the store manager on the phone....what? Long story short, they had an semi full of drywall, about to sell it "FIRST COME< FIRST SERVED" and expected it to sell out quickly. Gratefully, he accepted my plea to save us two truckloads full to be delivered to Vidor on Saturday!

This has superceded original plans to collect on the ground in ATX. Now, these funds will be used to purchase from McCoys in Orange TX. In addition, I will be purchasing box fans, contractor grade trash bags, and other goodies locally to pack into my car, drive to Vidor, and meet the McCoy's truck on Saturday at 11:00, along with a slew of volunteers from the congregation to help us unload.

Ya'll have amazed me with your generosity and willingness to support. They know we are coming, Saturday at 11:00, and they are already so excited to have help at last! We will be the very first delivery to the Maple Gate Baptist Church Hurricane Harvey Relief Drive.....they are celebrating, and so am I. They were under water a week ago....this is a BIG deal.

Thanks to all. I am signing off for now but will update you regularly on how your funds are being spent.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE, let's push this even farther if we can. Any funds anyone can pitch in between now and Friday is helpful. ANY AMOUNT WHATSOEVER. A box fan at Home Depot is $16.00 right now on sale. I plan to buy a bunch of them!
