Kerala is a small coastal state at the southern tip of India and was an idyllic tourist paradise. The current floods in August 2018 could be described as the ‘flood of the century’ and it claimed almost 500 lives. The floods have caused immeasurable misery and suffering for the people of Kerala and the scale of destruction and devastation in Kerala is massive. Entire villages have been evacuated; bridges, roads and other infrastructure have been completely destroyed. Over a million people were displaced and it will set Kerala back by at least two decades according to experts.

The floods have damaged schools in many parts in the state of Kerala. Ernakulam, Alapuzha, and Pathanamthitta are the most severely affected districts. School infrastructure, starting from compound walls to IT were washed away, and furniture was irrecoverably lost. It is reported that as many as 522 schools were affected. A Government agency which worked on assessing the damages has found that 981 computers and 567 laptops were damaged or lost during the deluge in four districts.

In the first phase, Helping Hands Canada & Rotary Club Willowdale has selected 15 Schools from three assembly constituencies in three districts for the Re-build Computer labs project.

This list was prepared in consultation with the Members of Legislative Assembly of the respective constituencies along with the state education department and has shown much interest in the proposed project and has offered all cooperation and assistance for implementation. Rotary Club Kalamassery (Cochin, India) will supervise and recruit local sole implementing agency for setting up of Computer labs in Schools. They will be the receiving end of the funds and to coordinate payments to the agency once each project is completed.

Our anticipated budget is to raise $150,000.00 CAD and Rotary foundation will match equal to the funds we raise upon approval.
