It is with a very heavy heart that I let you all know about the impact of Storm Elsa on Backyard Bar. On Wednesday night our little winter wonderland suffered irreparable damage. The whole marquee, the lights and decorations attached to the roof, our Christmas tree and music speakers all ended up on the ground below.
As most of our friends and customers know, we struggled a lot with winter solutions and were well aware that it would be difficult to maintain a structure in our very open and unprotected space. With this in mind, we went above and beyond to install safety precautions which were unfortunately still no match for a storm of such force. When we look at the damage done throughout Portugal with homes and lives lost, we consider ourselves lucky and our hearts go out to anyone else affected.
We put everything we had into the bar. We knew that winter would be a difficult period for us but we believed we could create something unique to the Algarve and were determined to push through. We are proud of what we achieved on such a limited budget and your feedback and comments over the last couple of months have filled us with happiness and built our confidence for the future. With no financial security net and the timing on losing out on what we predicted to be a busy couple of weeks, we are devastated to admit that this is most probably too much of a hit to survive.
It is not in either of our natures or characters to ask for or accept help. So many of you have been so kind in giving us gifts for the bar and we always find it uncomfortable to receive rather than give to others. However, in this moment of crisis and under much duress, we have decided to take the advice of our friends and set up a fundraising page. We never dreamed of being in this situation but a few people have already asked how to send financial help.
We do feel gratitude for getting to know so many of you in this close knit community and know that you all have more to offer than pure fundraising. During this difficult and uncertain time we are asking for any forms of advice, wisdom or opportunity from pop up venues to more long term solutions.
Whatever happens in the future, we want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts to anyone who has taken time to visit Backyard Bar, shared magical evenings with us or believed in us. We feel blessed to have had the opportunity to bring a dream to a reality, even if it was for such a painfully short time.
