Help Support our Book Drive!
As graduate students at Sacred Heart University, my fellow classmate, Erin French and I are studying to become school teachers. As our graduate year winds down and we anticipate our graduation in May, we are looking to do one more thing before we walk and receive our diplomas.
During the fall 2016 semester, Erin and I had the privilege of taking a reading practicum course at my university. It was part of Horizons, a reading program where education students tutor lower income, struggling readers in hopes of instilling them with a love for reading and the ability to achieve their goals.
We both had the opportunity to tutor students from a local school in Bridgeport, CT. What we found out about this school left us stunned. Classrooms with no libraries filled with books, few or no supplies, and little or no enthusiasm for reading. Classrooms were filled with students without the passion for picking up a book.
As a result of this, Erin and I proposed to our university that a book drive would be a great way to contribute to the students of this local Bridgeport school. By collecting books to donate, we figured that we might be able to help spark an interest in kids to pick up a new book.
We are reaching out to you in hopes that you would like to make a donation to our book drive fund so that we can purchase books through Amazon or Scholastic Books. We are looking for brand new or gently used books, leveled from Kindergarten through 6th grade.
