Surfacing By Laurel Brady

Dear friends, family, and lovely colleagues,

I have created this gofundme campaign to help raise funds for my one-woman show "Surfacing."

"Surfacing" is near and dear to my heart because it deals with issues of living with anxiety, depression , family, and the stigma that comes from not being able to handle life in a way that is socially acceptable. Part poetry, part movement, part dark humor, "Surfacing" is a play about a young woman trying to confess to her mother about her struggles with depression and anxiety. Surfacing explores the expectations that many people have of someone living with anxiety and depression and explores the impact those judgments can have on a person's life.

I wrote "Surfacing" in the winter of 2014, and performed in this piece in April 2014 for the Paprika Festival. I was later awarded the Theatre Creators Reserve grant by the recommendation of Theatre Passe' Muraille to keep working on it. It has been two creative-filled years and now it's time to birth my metaphorical baby.

Although I have been consistently applying for many creation and production grants to help make this show a reality, I find myself having to ask my peers to help assist making this dream a reality. My hope for this show is that audience members will leave the theater not only thinking about what they've seen but that they'll also be able to discuss it openly and honestly. I hope that after seeing it if you or anyone close to you ever gets to a place where you feel like this world is too much for you, you are inspired to reach out and get help. Something I've learned in my short time on this planet is that without meaningful connection and honesty, we have very little to get us through. It's easy to feel alone and label ourselves as "crazy" but that feeling should never stop anyone from reaching out to seek help.

If any of us have the opportunity to lift another person up, we should take it. If "Surfacing" can mirror someone else's struggle and allow them to openly voice their experience, then I've proudly done my job.

This is why the Surfacing team has committed to donating 10% of ticket sales to a Women's College Hospital due to their hands-on and innovative approach to women's mental health treatment and being a leading international force in research for women's mental health.

I truly believe that Theatre is an art form as well as a tool for social change, and I would be delighted to get your support. Please remember that support comes in many different forms so whether that means a monetary donation, a share of this link, or a free hour of rehearsal space, we appreciate any type of help.

Your donations will be going towards rehearsal space, booking our venue, programs, promotional material, and costumes, making sure we have lighting, sound, and set materials.

Surfacing will take place in January 2017. I hope to see you there! Thank you for taking the time to read. It means a lot.

Laurel and The Surfacing Team.
