Dear Friends,

This has been an amazing year for me. I have worked hard to promote writers I believe in through my reading series, the Hootenanny, and have gone on to see many of those poets and friends win prizes and publish books. I won the Split This Rock poetry prize judged by Natalie Diaz, and a Ken Warfel Fellowship for Poetry in Community. I attended Bread Loaf, where I made amazing connections with other writers and built my craft. I have been diligently working on my writing, and am putting together my first full-length book of poems. As a performer, I have also toured the country extensively to share my work, and was the 2013 Rain City Women of the World Slam Champion. This has also been an incredibly difficult time. This is the first year I have been completely self-employed as a teaching artist, teaching youth through the Writers in the Schools program and through community organizations. This is a dream job, but one that is constantly in flux, depending on the budgets of schools and organizations. Because of this, I live well below the poverty line, and rarely have extra funds to put towards experiences like writing retreats, though these hives of learning help me to grow by leaps and bounds as a writer.

I need your help to continue this momentum. I am so grateful to have been named an Emerging Writers Fellow by the Lambda Foundation, an organization devoted to supporting and developing queer writers. Lambda has recognized me with a partial scholarship, but I still need to raise $750  for room, board, and airfare to be able to attend the Emerging Fellows Writers Retreat this summer to study poetry with Kazim Ali.

In my recent work, I have been digging deep into questions of identity formation, intergenerational trauma, and how queerness intersects with all of this. I know that the Lambda Literary Retreat will place me with a cohort of fellow LGTBQ writers with whom I can grapple with these questions and that I will leave with new direction and renewed vigor for completing my manuscript. Anything you can give would help: $150, $50, or even $15 will go directly to get me to this amazing retreat.

Thank you for believing in me and this wild thing I am trying to do. I am beyond lucky to live this life, and to have your support.

Yours,

Sara Brickman
