RAMSI Children's Summer Camp

Hello wonderful humans <3

We (RAMSI) are organising a very exciting Summer Camp for children in Direct Provision this summer! And we need some help...

First let me explain a bit about our camp idea and reasons for doing it.

The camp will run from August 7th-17th in Liberties College, D8.  The wonderful children attending will be from Hatch Hall Accommodation Centre, Dublin 2.   This is our first year doing it so we are starting small due to - we'll be running the camp with about 25 kids. Hopefully next year granted all goes well we will hopefully be able to grow the idea and organise a camp for more children.

We are incredibly lucky to be based in a city with so many creative, musical, arty, sporty, caring people who have already offered to volunteer at the camp - each day there'll be a bunch of different activities and workshops for the kids. We'll have art classes, dancing, music, sports, drama, swimming lessons, trips and so much more. We'll also be heading to Tayto Park with the kids and their parents.

We are putting on the camp because we believe every child has the right to enjoy and should have access to high quality educational, creative, engaging, fun, enriching activities.  Many of us involved in the planning are working in education as teachers or youth workers or volunteers or coaches etc. We know when the summer holidays come around that kids can get bored and not have too much to do at times. We also know that accessing these activities during the summer can be out of reach financially for some parents, such as those in Direct Provision who are still not allowed to work and get an allowance of €21.60 a week from the government. Imagine trying to cover basic costs on that much, let alone pay for a summer camp for your kids? Because we live in a deeply unequal society, where so many are socially excluded in so many ways, too many kids (whether in DP or in emergency accommodation) are left behind and locked out of the opportunities that every young person should have access to.

While the summer can and should be such a lovely, wonderful time, for too many kids living in Direct Provision centres and emergency accommodation hostels/hotel rooms the summer can be a really tough time with little or no access to adequate play areas and educational spaces.

We know our project is small but we hope that you agree it could support a small number of kids for a short two weeks to access the kinds of activities that all people need in their lives. Its not nearly enough, but its something.

If you think its something worthwhile to support please donate a few euros and share with your friends.

Warmest thanks,

Ellen, Kate and everyone on the summer camp team with Refugee and Migrant Solidarity Ireland

P.S we have applied for two grants which we'll be informed about in July, if we get them that would cover the majority of our costs, in which case money raised here could be used to make the camp even better or to organise more activities for these kids once they return to school.

Below is our rough budget:

Insurance €500
Swimming classes €150
Cinema €200
Art materials €200
Trip to Tayto park €1000
Snacks €150
Final day 'graduation’ - materials, food €150
Gravity climbing wall - €100

Total: €2500
