Ramp to Paradise

Selling a product is hard, selling myself is really difficult and selling my kickass idea valued at $900,000 plus seems impossible but here’s my attempt.  I don’t have any perks of real value that I can give – just my sincere gratitude and a shout out on Social Media.

I like to travel, something I rarely do because of the ad hoc information as to what “truly wheelchair accessible” really is.

Hi I’m Tanya Barton.   As a person living with cerebral palsy and having to use an electric wheelchair I rarely go away, whether it be: overnight, an annual holiday or visiting family interstate. I find that places who advertise that they have wheelchair accessible rooms often turn out to be nothing like what I would describe as wheelchair friendly. Just for starters, it is common for me not to be able to get in the front door as there is a small ledge which I need to have a straight run up to but it never works as there’s often a wall just inside preventing this from happening. Psychological walls, maybe, but I’m really not a fan of physical walls crumbling around me.

There has been an occasion where although I was told there was a handrail in the shower and there was, the shower was in an enclosed glass cubicle. I’m not sure how a showerchair was supposed to fit in there let alone another person to assist me. I had two choices, one be extremely disappointed and abandon the break away which meant returning home or two have a cold shower in the pool area for the duration of my stay.

To the Private Investor, handrails beside the toilet and a ramp out onto the balcony maybe aesthetically unpleasing though without these aesthetically unpleasing features, people with disabilities and mobility restrictions are unable to have a holiday at the destination of their choice.

One of the biggest problems with holiday accommodation is that when they are sold to a Private Investor, he/she is unaware of the importance of the basic necessities that people with disabilities and mobility restrictions require to get through each day.  Hence there is a huge growing untapped market – our aging population and people with disabilities.

How you can help?

There is an extreme lack of choice in wheelchair accessible holiday accommodation for people with disabilities and mobility restrictions. Not just for me, for anyone who uses a wheelchair or who has limited mobility. If you have ever had an accident just before you were due to go on a holiday, you would understand how one small step or how a narrow hallway can turn your long awaited holiday into a nightmare.

This is where I would greatly appreciate your help.  Whether you generously donate money or are able to spread the word about this campaign, you will be giving me the ability to make my dream come true to purchase a 4 bedroom unit or house on the water front suitable for families, carers, school groups on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland, which I will modify to make it truly wheelchair accessible holiday accommodation for people with a disability and the elderly.  I will then, in turn,

*  As a person speaking from personal experience I will   be able to guarantee and give you peace of mind knowing that the accommodation will be fully wheelchair accessible.

* Provide people with choice of wheelchair friendly accommodation in popular holiday destinations starting on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland then expanding throughout Australia,

* Be putting the fun and excitement back into planning a holiday and actually being able to have the holiday you dreamed of.

I could have gone down easy street and made this not-for-profit but personally I would love to run another business of my own, become financially independent and give back to the community.

The main aim of this campaign is not to obtain a holiday home for myself, although it would be really nice to live the high life, it is to purchase a 4 bedroom house or unit in a popular holiday destination on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland, where people with a disability and the elderly can escape and have their own dream holiday.

If for whatever reason I am unable to reach my target of $900,000 the below table shows different properties within lower price brackets.

$400,000 – 2 bedroom suburban property, fully modified for wheelchairs

$700,000 – 2 bedroom property, waterfront, fully modified for wheelchairs

$850,000 – 3 bedroom waterfront property, fully modified for wheelchairs.

$950,000 Plus – 3 / 4+ bedroom waterfront property, fully modified for wheelchairs.

Thank you kindly for your support and interest in my kickass idea. Now please help me kick butt by donating and sharing.
