Botanical Tyranny Parlor Room

Who am I?

I am Jane Rainwater and I am an educator, designer, curator and exhibiting artist. I am trying to raise money for my installation project “The Botanical Tyranny Parlor.” The Botanical Tyranny Parlor raises awareness about gun violence prevention.

 LOOK VERY CLOSELY:
The Botanical Tyranny Parlor Installation

My work is both beautiful and ugly. The Parlor engages the viewer with its seemingly innocent decorative delight; yet upon closer examination the work challenges and questions our attraction by revealing darker truths.

I explore the hidden cost inherent in most of what we find seductively attractive. Rooted in the tradition of botanical illustration, the drawn silhouettes of seemingly real plants are in fact carefully constructed from silhouettes of axes, scimitars, guns, and other lethal weaponry grenades.

As I worked on these drawings and research the project began to take shape as an installation of a Victorian Parlor with furniture, fabrics, wallpaper and rugs. The proposal drawings are what you are seeing in the film. My plan is to tour the Botanical Tyranny Parlor to different galleries museums and other appropriate venues. It's premiere installation will take place on March 25, 2017 at:
The Dirt Salon, 50 Bartholomew Avenue
Hartford, Connecticut 06106

7:00-9:00: Artists Reception
9:30 -12:00 Dance Party featuring DJ Jon Eastman

What do I need the funds for?
I need funds to realize the physical installation of the Parlor. I have custom-designed fabrics, furniture and wall paper to complete the parlor exhibition for it's debut at The Dirt Salon on March 25, 2017.

 Budget Proposal

Fabric: $40-$50/yd x 50yds: $2,000
For upholstery and drapes

Wall Paper: 200 sq. ft: $1,000

Total                       $ 3,000

Why do I care and why should you?
In 2014, 23 children and three educators were murdered at a school at an elementary school in Sandy Hook, CT. I am horrified daily by the statistic that approximately 12,000 people lose their lives every year from guns used in crime, for “protection,” careless storage of guns and ammo and suicide.  My drawing exhibitions have raised awareness around gun violence. I have raised money for Everytown for Gun Safety through the sale of my Butterfly T-shirt available here. I published a book, “Botanical Tyranny: The Evil of Flowers” available here. Hopefully the Parlor will encourage viewers to think about and look more closely the gun violence issue.

In appreciation of your gifts I offer you the following perks:

$20, my undying love and devotion, and your name listed on my donor wall at my exhibitions of the Parlor.

$50:  A signed butterfly from the installation

$100: A Butterfly T-Shirt (profits donated to Everytown for Gun safety)

$200: A 5” x 7” A botanical tyranny insect or flower on a printed on a page from Beaudelaire’s “The Flowers of Evil, ” signed monoprint.
