My name is RaDonda Vaught, I am a nurse in Nashville TN.  I have been indicted by the Davidson County Grand Jury & subsequently arrested by Tennessee Bureau of Investigation on charges of Reckless Homicide & Impaired Adult Abuse in connection with an incident that occurred while I was working at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in December of 2017.

I am limited in what I say, because it can now be used against me in a court of law.

I want to profess that I am experiencing a world of emotions, beyond words.  The expressions of peoples' kindness, support, and most significantly, the willingness to forgive are simply unfathomable... I cannot begin to describe it.  I want to convey my everlasting gratitude to everyone who has reached out to me in some form or another via calls, texts, visits, prayers, emails, cards, care packages, messages, comments & sending of their support through others close to me.

It was suggested by both the leadership of "Show Me Your Stethoscope" as well as many friends, family & even complete strangers, that I create this fund raiser for my legal council, so that nurses everywhere can show their support if they desire to do so.  Many feel very strongly that setting the precedent that nurses should be indicted and incarcerated for inadvertent medical errors is dangerous.

The many details of this incident deserve to be properly reviewed and addressed so that we all have an opportunity to learn from my mistake and create changes that will ensure the safety of all future patients as well as maintaining the future honesty, integrity & safe practices of all nurses.  However, now that this is a criminal matter, I must place my trust in the justice system and allow it to be handled in that realm.  Therefore funds donated will go towards obtaining the best legal council available.

Those of you who know me well know that both myself and my husband Ed are not the ones to ask for help.  We have always been blessed and fortunate to be on the other end of the spectrum, where helping people is something we are more comfortable & familiar with.  It is humbling to say the least to admit that despite being responsible and making good financial decisions, we now find ourselves in this position.  I am on unpaid temporary suspension from my job & given the circumstances surrounding this case, I do not foresee being able to return to work anytime soon.

I have already incurred the cost of bail.  And we now know that incurring the cost of good criminal and administrative legal council is going to be substantial.  My husband and I are willing & prepared to give up everything we have to fight this legal battle.  With that said, it has been highly recommended by many around us that we initiate this account to offer some assistance that we undoubtably will need.

Thank you to all of you who have shown your love and support for us.

Thank you all so much for your support. I wanted to share a quick update, as I have had several inquiries about upcoming court hearings. The next court date of April 11th will be postponed. The discovery (aka evidence) was just filed in late March by the Davidson County D.A., and this doesn’t leave much time for my attorney to review it after finishing a current trial. We filed a motion to extend this week & we are waiting to hear a response. I will be sure to keep everyone informed. Please keep all involved in your thoughts and prayers moving forward & thank you all for the kindness and support you have shown.

I want to take the opportunity to once again thank each and every single person who has followed this campaign or story in some way.

I would like to specifically thank Janie Harvey Garner of 'Show Me Your Stethoscope'. Without her dedication, support and sharing of this campaign, NONE of this would be possible. I have not had the pleasure of meeting Janie face to face, looking her in the eye, shaking her hand or hugging her neck... but I am hopeful that day will come soon.

To every single person and family that has donated, YOU are my driving force. I am able to enter this legal battle because of YOU and your selfless contributions. I know what we make as nurses. I know how hard we work. Each and every single cent is significant. You don't have much to give, yet you gave it anyway. It speaks volumes to the type of people nurses are, caring for people when they are at their worst.

To everyone who has sent a thought or prayer, I continue to ask that you keep EVERYONE affected in your thoughts and prayers.

To every person who has respectfully agreed to disagree, THANK YOU. I begrudge no one of their freedom to express how they feel. Ultimately, if you are talking here, you are keeping up with this situation, which in turn will allow it to remain an important topic of discussion. Perhaps that will aid in the prevention of future errors, and encourage the continued honest reporting of errors/near misses in order to ensure that patients remain safe.

Finally, I wanted to update you all to tell you that am doing my due diligence to find the best legal team I can. I have seen the suggestions from complete strangers to increase the goal. I have been informed by many publicly & privately that $50,000 is not going to be enough. I had hopes that it would, but sadly they are right. I have met with several qualified individuals & had the opportunity to discuss the costs to take on this case. You all are right. Good legal council is not cheap, and this will likely not end quickly. Therefore I have taken your advice and raised the goal. I want to be clear that we are not planning to simply rely solely on contributions to this campaign to pay for legal council. If there is a tangible possession that be sold, it will be. At the end of the day, things are just that... things. They mean nothing in the grand scheme of life.

In the event that there is anything left after this legal matter is resolved, all of it will be donated to 'Show Me Your Stethoscope' so that they can continue their mission to love and support nurses everywhere.

Thank you all for your love and support. I grow more humbled every day.

Wow. I’m speechless... what an unbelievable blessing to wake up to. You all are AMAZING. Thank you. While you are praying for and supporting me, please remember to first keep EVERYONE affected in your thoughts and prayers. I am beyond blessed & cannot say THANK YOU enough.

What an amazing response... I could not have imagined this. I am so thankful for each and every single person that has contributed. I want to ensure that I maintain transparency throughout this process about where the funds will go & try to set goals that are realistic in terms of what we think the costs will be. I have come to the realization that I will need two different types of attorneys, one who specializes in criminal defense & another that specializes in administrative board and licensure issues... much like different specialties in medicine I suppose? Currently, we are looking at $15,037 for bail and a retainer for the administrative attorney. No information yet on the criminal attorney retainer, but I anticipate that will be much more & likely we will work through that rather quickly. Again, I want to express to EVERYONE how thankful we are for the support. It always seems tacky and awkward to discuss finances, but y'all are are all in this with me & I cannot say thank you enough.

Much Love,
RaDonda Vaught
