Reduce Prison Recidivism Rate Using Art

Donación protegida
Hello! My name is Rachel and I am finishing up my second year of undergraduate study, majoring in Sociology and concentrating in Law and Society.

I was recently accepted to be a summer fellow at the Project Social Impact summer institute for summer 2014. It is a two-week program that brings together a small group of men and women who are interested in creating social change through the arts.

My proposed project is using Arts education to reduce the recidivism rates for juvenile offenders. The main goal is to keep juveniles from reentering the prison system, by introducing them to a selection of forms of artistic expression, including (but not limited to), painting, sculpture, dance, yoga, poetry, and woodworking. The specific art programs would be determined through the interests of the participants, and would be developed overtime based on success.

The United States has an extreme problem with over-incarcerating, and many states have excessively high recidivism rates. One of the greatest problems is the number of juveniles that enter the system and continue to bounce in and out of jail through their adult lives, leading to multi-generational cycles. Asserting positive skills sets and increasing the self-esteem of young offenders, which can come from engaging in the arts, will ultimately work towards reducing the likelihood that an individual will end up back in prison.

From the website "“ "The Summer Institute is an interdisciplinary approach to community engagement, cultural empathy, and conflict transformation through the medium of art."

By attending this two-week summer institute I hope to gain some vital skills that will help me work towards my long-term goal of working to reduce the rates at which offenders are re-incarcerated, focusing on youths who are currently serving their first sentence. The courses and workshops, as well as the collaborative nature of the Institute, will help me put my ideas in motion, and will give me a good starting place to develop a program for juvenile offenders that gives a constructive outlet in replace of destructive behaviors, as well as the skills to build more positive relationships through an increased self-understanding. This program will be an invaluable stepping-stone towards fulfiilling the goals of this long-term project.

To attend the Summer Institute I am looking to raise $1000 towards the cost of tuition. I hope you will help me reach this goal.
