What is unique about this show? Students enrolled in dance programs at John Marshall High School, Northwest Classen High School, Oklahoma Centennial Mid High School and U.S. Grant High School are involved.  Also, for the first time this year, we are adding 30 students from local Elementary schools involved with Prairie Dance's Arts Moves Program.  The dance instructors of the schools were emailed regarding their desire to participate, and they responded back if they wanted to be involved. Members of RACE Dance meet with the students once to twice a week leading up to the show, teaching them choreography, and fundamentals of hip hop.

Executive Director Hui Cha Poos says being able to include kids who normally do not get the opportunity to perform outside of school advances RACE's mission to bring social awarenenss and change through dance performances and education. "It is about giving them the experience of a professional show so they can understand dance on another level. It also brings kids together form different schools in a non-competitive environment to perpetuate a culture of collaboration and inclusion," said Poos, Executive Director of RACE.

Like the original Nutcracker, HHN follows the journey of a young man who seeks to find something missing from his life, only to discover that "it" already exists inside himself. However, HHN's high energy music, and dance styles incorporatemany more twists and turns than the traditional Nutcrakers. The take away for the audience is a message of perserverance, family and holiday spirit.

Why does RACE Dance need your help ? RACE Dance wants to make this the best experience for all of the high schoolers involved and continue to make this a holiday tradition for them. In order for RACE Dance to do this, we need additional funding for costumes, staging, production overhead, choregraphers, and much more. In addition, we would like to present the students with souvenir style gifts so they can always remember this special performance. We also want to give a stipend to each school to help their dance programs grow. Lastly, it was our hope that we grow big enough to have our show at OCCC, and we have!  There are multiple expenditures that come with this growth, so we need your help for sustainability and exposure in our community.   We want all our performers to feel a role in our efforts to pull our commuinty together and have great memories to look back on forever.

Any amount of donation is greatly appreciated. If you cannot donate here, we ask that you share our GO FUND ME campaingn and check out the show. Thank you for reading our story!!!

Below is a video from an interview with Hui about last season's show but with many details about the original ideas and thoughts behind the show.

Hip Hop Nutcracker helped me to discover a hidden potential I didn't know I had. It taught me that the best things in life are not material things. Life is neither good nor bad; it's what you make it. - Victor Valdez US Grant High School

We have added young dancers to our show this year. 30 of Prairie Dance Theatre's Youth Company will be joining us on stage to show off their moves and we can't wait! They are all from PDT's Smart Moves program which is a comprehensive, in-school dance program modeled after the pedagogy of the National Dance Institute. Your donations will directly benefit these dancers and many other programs in Okc!!

"Those who are participating feel very special to be a part of HHN. Most of our dancers have never been on a professional stage so they will really have no idea what a privilege it is yet. I'm thrilled to expose them not only to a professional dance company but also for them to see so many teens and adults (especially men) dancing at a higher level. We are looking forward to seeing them grow as a result of this experience! - Tonya Kilburn (Artistic Director-Prairie Dance Theatre)

Audrey Johnston is a 4th year member of RACE Dance Company. She came to us from a Ballet background with no hip hop experience. With hard work, great exposure, and a groovy attitude, she managed to kick herself into the lead role of Mom in our Hip Hop Nutcracker. We're so excited to have her in the show!!

I've performed the traditional Nutcracker hundreds of times over the course of my career, but joining RACE Dance Company the year that Hip Hop Nutcracker came to fruition was something I'll never forget. This production is built from the ground up by the most passionate people Oklahoma has to offer. Between getting to mentor the high school dancers, the heartwarming re-imagined storyline, and the fun dances we get to perform, there's always something for me to be thankful about for being a part of this show!- Audrey Johnston (Mom)
