You can fly across the U.S. in about six hours.
You can drive the distance in about six days.
You can bicycle across in about a week.

Wait. What? You can bicycle across the U.S. in a week?

Mark is Mark Mandel, 63, retired engineer and resident of Green Valley. Ken is Ken Shuart, 59 and semi retired, of Annapolis,MD. Mark and Ken are entered as a team in the 60-69 division of the 2019 RAAM—Race Across America—which will begin in Oceanside, CA June 15 and end when the riders cross the finish line in Annapolis, MD.

If all goes well, they aim to complete the 3,070 miles in seven or eight days, crossing four mountain ranges (Coast Range, Rockies, Sangre de Cristo and Appalachians), the Sonoran Desert, the Colorado Plateau, the Great Plains and four major rivers (the Colorado, Mississippi, Missouri and Ohio), climbing some 175,000 feet during the epic ride.

All this effort takes some support. Mark and Ken will have a crew of eight, including Mark’s wife, Laura, and coach, Justin Peschka, to drive the two support vans, time the one- to four-hour segments each will ride, scout the route and maintain contact with the race managers, maintain the bikes, and—most importantly—make sure the men get food and sleep!

You can read about the race, and follow Mark & Ken's progress on FB.  All contributions will be split with the Tucson based El Grupo Youth Cycling organization and used for their summer bike camps and Durango, CO. programs.
