Hello and thank you for considering a contribution to Andy's Kids, a scholarship fund for kids who lost a parent to an accidental overdose.
It's hard work and expensive to start all over again as a grandparent, aunt, or other relative with school, sports, and other extracurricular activities that school-aged kids require, all while grieving for a lost child or loved one. Most parents who succumb to an accidental overdose are of child bearing age, usually leaving behind at least one child of grade shool age. Many times, these kids are troubled and need an extra push or additional opportunities to succeed after having suffered such a tragic loss of a parent. We aim to provide that additional opportunity in the form of tuition assistance to any post-high school educational program of their choice.
Quad Cities Harm Reduction; the only harm reduction non-profit in the State of Iowa, raises awareness about the overdose epidemic and through our work, we've been inspired to do so much more than we started out to do. We hold an annual Awareness Walk, Community Informational Panels, guest panelist, and an annual Holiday Gala for families who lost a loved one to accidential overdose. QCHR holds lifesaving Naloxone trainings, distributes Naloxone Rescue Kits to anyone in need (free of cost) and clean needles to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS through intravenous drug use. In most cases, people who would benefit from having clean needles and/or a Naloxone Rescue Kit cannot afford the high costs of a Kit through their own means. Kits cost an average of $16-40 for 2 lifesaving doses per kit.
