EN DEUX MOTS. . .
Nous organisons une exposition d'art contemporain, "Etat Temporaire: Mutagenèse", cet été, du vendredi 14 Juin au 23 Juin.
Conçue comme une réflexion à but non-lucratif, et surtout voulue participative, l'exposition est organisée en collaboration avec l'Espace Contemporain DOC, 26 rue du docteur Potain 75019 à Paris, et un groupe d'étudiants internationaux en MBA de l'Institut d ' Etudes Supérieures des Arts (IESA, 75011 Paris).
Pour nous, la question de l'hybridation est essentielle à la compréhension de notre environnement en constante évolution; la mutagenèse peut aussi être décrite comme le processus d'altérations génétiques, intentionnelles ou spontanées, qui à son tour entraîne la mutation d'un être vivant.

We are organizing a contemporary art exhibition, "Etat Temporaire: Mutagenèse", this summer, from Friday, June 14th to June 23rd.
Designed as a non-profit and participatory reflection, it is organized in collaboration between the Contemporary Exhibition Space DOC , rue du Dr. Potain 26, 75019 in Paris, and a group of international MBA students from the Institut d'Etudes Supérieures des Arts (IESA, 75011 Paris).
For us, the issue of hybridization is essential to the understanding of our ever-changing environment; mutagenesis may also be described as the process of genetic alterations, intentional or spontaneous, which in turn results in the mutation of an affected being.

1. CONCEPT DE L’EXPOSITION
L’hybridation et la mutation résultent, par définition, de la combinaison des qualités de différents éléments; et tendent à rendre l’être capable de s’adapter à un nouvel environnement. Ce processus de conversion reste ambigu: les nouvelles formes qui en découlent ne peuvent plus être identifiées comme quelque chose de connu. Les nouvelles formes émergent sous forme de combinaisons transitoires, rassemblant leurs différences, qui tour à tour, coexistent et forment une unité. Ce phénomène est le point central de l’exposition État Temporaire Mutagenèse.
Les manipulations génétiques, les modifications de l’apparence humaine, la création d’une intelligence artificielle, ensemble avec la catastrophe écologique causée par les activités humaines - sont autant d’éléments alarmants quant au tournant historique que nous vivons dans ce processus de transition, passant de l’ère industrielle à l’époque de la biotechnologie.
Quelles formes vont apparaître durant ce processus? Comment les choses que nous connaissons vont-elles changer? Quelles mutations et formes hybrides nous attendent-elles à la fin de cette période de transition? L’incertain subsiste; et cette métamorphose en cours peut être comparée à la notion biologique de mutagenèse.
La mutagenèse est le processus de modification génétique, intentionnelle ou spontanée, qui résulte en la mutation de l’objet exposé. En biologie, le phénomène est strictement lié au changement d’une séquence d’ADN. Cependant, l’exposition État Temporaire: Mutagenèse veut explorer le concept dans un sens plus métaphorique. Les activités humaines, scientifiques et industrielles conduisent l’humanité à des changements globaux dans toutes les sphères du vivant, de plus en plus éloignées de leurs conditions originelles. La condition naturelle est depuis toujours une norme inaltérable. L’aliénation radicale de l’espèce humaine du naturel au « technologique » a débuté simultanément à la révolution industrielle. Depuis lors, le développement humain s’est accéléré plus rapidement que n’importe quel autre mécanisme. Le processus auquel nous assistons peut, dès lors, être davantage identifié comme une mutation plutôt qu’une évolution. Le degré d’incertain demeure, d’autant plus qu’il y a toujours quelque chose d’énigmatique et d’inconfortable dans le processus de conversion. La mutation va-t-elle conduire à un résultat harmonieux?
Les possibles influences de la science sur les humains et la nature se sont reflétées dans l’histoire récente de l’art, faisant écho aux expériences scientifiques et aux résultats possibles de l’hybridation. De nombreux artistes ont travaillé sur l’idée du monstrueux et de la mutation physique; par exemple Patricia Piccinini, Joel-Peter Witkin, Hans Bellmer ou encore Pierre Molinier. Cependant, dans la réalité contemporaine, se concentrer uniquement sur des transmutations physiques terrifiantes n’est plus consistant. De nouvelles questions se posent. Le changement est-il inévitable? Est-il possible d’éviter le point de non retour?
En prenant comme point de départ la métamorphose, l’hybridation et les mutations, l’exposition État Temporaire: Mutagenèse, interroge les processus de changement et de transition, en explorant la manière dont les artistes contemporains appréhendent l’état actuel du processus perpétuel de transformation.
Cette exposition présente des artistes qui jouent avec la notion de transition aussi bien en tant que sujet principal de leurs oeuvres ou à travers les matériaux qu’ils utilisent. Certaines pièces sont explicites quand d’autres sont davantage abstraites. Ensemble, elles introduisent un dialogue entre les artistes, unis au sein du laboratoire de l’imagination.
État Temporaire: Mutagenèse, rassemble des artistes qui, à travers différentes approches du sujet, souhaitent se concentrer précisément sur le moment de la transition elle-même plutôt que sur sa destination. Nous sommes, de ce fait, plongés dans un environnement fertile où sont questionnés le passé, le présent et le futur de ce qui est connu.

3. À PROPOS DU DOC
Né du regroupement d’artistes en quête d’un lieu de travail, DOC est une association à but non lucratif soumise à la loi 1901. DOC est un moyen de partager des idées, connaissances et savoirs faire artistiques dans le cadre d’un projet de diffusion et de valorisation de la création contemporaine.
Situé au 26 rue du docteur Potain dans le XIXème arrondissement, l’association permet à des artistes et artisans jeunes ou confirmés de trouver un espace de travail et de partage dans un contexte où l’offre d’ateliers à Paris ne répond pas à la demande. DOC participe activement à la vie et à la dynamique du quartier.
L’association réunit une soixantaine de personnes. Chaque membre du collectif participe selon ses compétences à la rénovation des locaux, à la mise en place d’ateliers de production, à la documentation des actions accomplies et aux différentes activités du lieu.
Expérience avant tout humaine, la mutualisation des ressources économiques et techniques, ainsi que le partage des connaissances entre les membres de l’association a permis la construction d’un projet autosuffisant et indépendant qui réunit une équipe forte, portée par son engagement au projet.

8. EXHIBITION CONCEPT
Hybridization and mutation are by definition the result of combining qualities of different elements, with the purpose of making the being capable of adapting to its new environment. There is always an ambiguity in the process of conversion, as the new forms which appear as a result of this process can no longer be identified as something known. New forms emerge as transitional combinations, holding together their differences, which in turn coexist and form a unity. This phenomenon is the central focal point of "État Temporaire : Mutagenèse".
Genetic experiments, modifications of the human appearance, the creation of artificial intelligence, together with ecological catastrophe caused by human activity – these are alarming indications that the historical moment we are living in is in the process of transitioning from the industrial era to the biotechnological epoch. Which forms will appear during this process? How will the things we know change? Which mutations and hybrid forms await us at the end of this transitional journey? The uncertainty remains; and this ongoing metamorphosis can be compared to the biological notion of mutagenesis.
Mutagenesis is the process of genetic modification, intentional or spontaneous, which results in mutations in the object exposed. In biology, the phenomenon is strictly related to the change of the DNA sequence; however, "État Temporaire : Mutagenèse" aims to explore the concept in a more metaphorical sense. Human, scientific, and industrial activities are leading humankind to global changes in all spheres of life, further and further away from natural conditions. The natural condition has forever been the immutable norm. The radical alienation of humankind from the natural towards “technological” started with the industrial revolution. Since then, human development has moved faster than any evolutionary mechanism is capable of doing. The process we are witnessing can therefore be seen more as mutation than evolution. The degree of uncertainty remains: it is as yet unknown whether this mutation will lead to a harmonious outcome, as there is always something uncomfortable and enigmatic in the process of conversion.
The possible influences of science on humans and nature has been reflected on art through the course of recent history, to echo scientific experiments and possible results of hybridization. Many artists have been addressing issues of monstrosity and physical mutation; for instance, Patricia Piccinini, Joel-Peter Witkin, Hans Ballmer, Pierre Molinier. Nevertheless, in contemporary reality, it is not sufficient to think only of terrifying physical transmutations. New questions have come to the fore, namely: Is change inevitable? And is it possible to avoid the point of no return? Taking metamorphosis, hybridization and mutations as a starting-point, the exhibition "État temporaire : Mutagenèse" poses questions on the processes of change and transition, by exploring how contemporary artists envision the current state of the perpetual process of transformation.
This exhibition presents artists who experiment with the notion of transition either in the subject-matter of their works or through the materials they use in their work. Some artworks are more explicit and others are more abstract; together they evoke a dialogue between the artists, united together within the laboratory of the imagination.
"État temporaire : Mutagenèse"gathers together artists who, through different approaches to the subject, wish to focus specifically on the moment of transition itself, regardless of the destination. We are thereby introduced into a fertile environment where we question the past, the present, and the future of what is known.

10. ABOUT THE DOC
DOC is a not-for-profit organization. DOC fosters the sharing of artistic ideas, knowledge, and techniques with an aim to promoting and spreading contemporary creation.
Located 26 rue du docteur Potain in the XIXth arrondissement of Paris, the place allows both young and experienced artists as well as artisans to find a space to work and share their ideas in a context where the demand for workshops in Paris far exceeds the offer. As such, DOC actively participates in the life and dynamics of the neighbourhood.
The organization counts 60 members. Using their individual skills, each member participates in the renovation of the building, the setting up of production workshops, documentation of the actions taken, and in the various activities of the place.
The pooling of economic and technical resources, as well as the sharing of knowledge among the members of the organization, have enabled the creation of a self-sufficient and independent project bringing together a strong team driven by commitment and human values.

Nous organisons une exposition d'art contemporain, "Etat Temporaire: Mutagenèse", cet été, du vendredi 14 Juin au 23 Juin.
Conçue comme une réflexion à but non-lucratif, et surtout voulue participative, l'exposition est organisée en collaboration avec l'Espace Contemporain DOC, 26 rue du docteur Potain 75019 à Paris, et un groupe d'étudiants internationaux en MBA de l'Institut d ' Etudes Supérieures des Arts (IESA, 75011 Paris).
Pour nous, la question de l'hybridation est essentielle à la compréhension de notre environnement en constante évolution; la mutagenèse peut aussi être décrite comme le processus d'altérations génétiques, intentionnelles ou spontanées, qui à son tour entraîne la mutation d'un être vivant.

We are organizing a contemporary art exhibition, "Etat Temporaire: Mutagenèse", this summer, from Friday, June 14th to June 23rd.
Designed as a non-profit and participatory reflection, it is organized in collaboration between the Contemporary Exhibition Space DOC , rue du Dr. Potain 26, 75019 in Paris, and a group of international MBA students from the Institut d'Etudes Supérieures des Arts (IESA, 75011 Paris).
For us, the issue of hybridization is essential to the understanding of our ever-changing environment; mutagenesis may also be described as the process of genetic alterations, intentional or spontaneous, which in turn results in the mutation of an affected being.

1. CONCEPT DE L’EXPOSITION
L’hybridation et la mutation résultent, par définition, de la combinaison des qualités de différents éléments; et tendent à rendre l’être capable de s’adapter à un nouvel environnement. Ce processus de conversion reste ambigu: les nouvelles formes qui en découlent ne peuvent plus être identifiées comme quelque chose de connu. Les nouvelles formes émergent sous forme de combinaisons transitoires, rassemblant leurs différences, qui tour à tour, coexistent et forment une unité. Ce phénomène est le point central de l’exposition État Temporaire Mutagenèse.
Les manipulations génétiques, les modifications de l’apparence humaine, la création d’une intelligence artificielle, ensemble avec la catastrophe écologique causée par les activités humaines - sont autant d’éléments alarmants quant au tournant historique que nous vivons dans ce processus de transition, passant de l’ère industrielle à l’époque de la biotechnologie.
Quelles formes vont apparaître durant ce processus? Comment les choses que nous connaissons vont-elles changer? Quelles mutations et formes hybrides nous attendent-elles à la fin de cette période de transition? L’incertain subsiste; et cette métamorphose en cours peut être comparée à la notion biologique de mutagenèse.
La mutagenèse est le processus de modification génétique, intentionnelle ou spontanée, qui résulte en la mutation de l’objet exposé. En biologie, le phénomène est strictement lié au changement d’une séquence d’ADN. Cependant, l’exposition État Temporaire: Mutagenèse veut explorer le concept dans un sens plus métaphorique. Les activités humaines, scientifiques et industrielles conduisent l’humanité à des changements globaux dans toutes les sphères du vivant, de plus en plus éloignées de leurs conditions originelles. La condition naturelle est depuis toujours une norme inaltérable. L’aliénation radicale de l’espèce humaine du naturel au « technologique » a débuté simultanément à la révolution industrielle. Depuis lors, le développement humain s’est accéléré plus rapidement que n’importe quel autre mécanisme. Le processus auquel nous assistons peut, dès lors, être davantage identifié comme une mutation plutôt qu’une évolution. Le degré d’incertain demeure, d’autant plus qu’il y a toujours quelque chose d’énigmatique et d’inconfortable dans le processus de conversion. La mutation va-t-elle conduire à un résultat harmonieux?
Les possibles influences de la science sur les humains et la nature se sont reflétées dans l’histoire récente de l’art, faisant écho aux expériences scientifiques et aux résultats possibles de l’hybridation. De nombreux artistes ont travaillé sur l’idée du monstrueux et de la mutation physique; par exemple Patricia Piccinini, Joel-Peter Witkin, Hans Bellmer ou encore Pierre Molinier. Cependant, dans la réalité contemporaine, se concentrer uniquement sur des transmutations physiques terrifiantes n’est plus consistant. De nouvelles questions se posent. Le changement est-il inévitable? Est-il possible d’éviter le point de non retour?
En prenant comme point de départ la métamorphose, l’hybridation et les mutations, l’exposition État Temporaire: Mutagenèse, interroge les processus de changement et de transition, en explorant la manière dont les artistes contemporains appréhendent l’état actuel du processus perpétuel de transformation.
Cette exposition présente des artistes qui jouent avec la notion de transition aussi bien en tant que sujet principal de leurs oeuvres ou à travers les matériaux qu’ils utilisent. Certaines pièces sont explicites quand d’autres sont davantage abstraites. Ensemble, elles introduisent un dialogue entre les artistes, unis au sein du laboratoire de l’imagination.
État Temporaire: Mutagenèse, rassemble des artistes qui, à travers différentes approches du sujet, souhaitent se concentrer précisément sur le moment de la transition elle-même plutôt que sur sa destination. Nous sommes, de ce fait, plongés dans un environnement fertile où sont questionnés le passé, le présent et le futur de ce qui est connu.

3. À PROPOS DU DOC
Né du regroupement d’artistes en quête d’un lieu de travail, DOC est une association à but non lucratif soumise à la loi 1901. DOC est un moyen de partager des idées, connaissances et savoirs faire artistiques dans le cadre d’un projet de diffusion et de valorisation de la création contemporaine.
Situé au 26 rue du docteur Potain dans le XIXème arrondissement, l’association permet à des artistes et artisans jeunes ou confirmés de trouver un espace de travail et de partage dans un contexte où l’offre d’ateliers à Paris ne répond pas à la demande. DOC participe activement à la vie et à la dynamique du quartier.
L’association réunit une soixantaine de personnes. Chaque membre du collectif participe selon ses compétences à la rénovation des locaux, à la mise en place d’ateliers de production, à la documentation des actions accomplies et aux différentes activités du lieu.
Expérience avant tout humaine, la mutualisation des ressources économiques et techniques, ainsi que le partage des connaissances entre les membres de l’association a permis la construction d’un projet autosuffisant et indépendant qui réunit une équipe forte, portée par son engagement au projet.

8. EXHIBITION CONCEPT
Hybridization and mutation are by definition the result of combining qualities of different elements, with the purpose of making the being capable of adapting to its new environment. There is always an ambiguity in the process of conversion, as the new forms which appear as a result of this process can no longer be identified as something known. New forms emerge as transitional combinations, holding together their differences, which in turn coexist and form a unity. This phenomenon is the central focal point of "État Temporaire : Mutagenèse".
Genetic experiments, modifications of the human appearance, the creation of artificial intelligence, together with ecological catastrophe caused by human activity – these are alarming indications that the historical moment we are living in is in the process of transitioning from the industrial era to the biotechnological epoch. Which forms will appear during this process? How will the things we know change? Which mutations and hybrid forms await us at the end of this transitional journey? The uncertainty remains; and this ongoing metamorphosis can be compared to the biological notion of mutagenesis.
Mutagenesis is the process of genetic modification, intentional or spontaneous, which results in mutations in the object exposed. In biology, the phenomenon is strictly related to the change of the DNA sequence; however, "État Temporaire : Mutagenèse" aims to explore the concept in a more metaphorical sense. Human, scientific, and industrial activities are leading humankind to global changes in all spheres of life, further and further away from natural conditions. The natural condition has forever been the immutable norm. The radical alienation of humankind from the natural towards “technological” started with the industrial revolution. Since then, human development has moved faster than any evolutionary mechanism is capable of doing. The process we are witnessing can therefore be seen more as mutation than evolution. The degree of uncertainty remains: it is as yet unknown whether this mutation will lead to a harmonious outcome, as there is always something uncomfortable and enigmatic in the process of conversion.
The possible influences of science on humans and nature has been reflected on art through the course of recent history, to echo scientific experiments and possible results of hybridization. Many artists have been addressing issues of monstrosity and physical mutation; for instance, Patricia Piccinini, Joel-Peter Witkin, Hans Ballmer, Pierre Molinier. Nevertheless, in contemporary reality, it is not sufficient to think only of terrifying physical transmutations. New questions have come to the fore, namely: Is change inevitable? And is it possible to avoid the point of no return? Taking metamorphosis, hybridization and mutations as a starting-point, the exhibition "État temporaire : Mutagenèse" poses questions on the processes of change and transition, by exploring how contemporary artists envision the current state of the perpetual process of transformation.
This exhibition presents artists who experiment with the notion of transition either in the subject-matter of their works or through the materials they use in their work. Some artworks are more explicit and others are more abstract; together they evoke a dialogue between the artists, united together within the laboratory of the imagination.
"État temporaire : Mutagenèse"gathers together artists who, through different approaches to the subject, wish to focus specifically on the moment of transition itself, regardless of the destination. We are thereby introduced into a fertile environment where we question the past, the present, and the future of what is known.

10. ABOUT THE DOC
DOC is a not-for-profit organization. DOC fosters the sharing of artistic ideas, knowledge, and techniques with an aim to promoting and spreading contemporary creation.
Located 26 rue du docteur Potain in the XIXth arrondissement of Paris, the place allows both young and experienced artists as well as artisans to find a space to work and share their ideas in a context where the demand for workshops in Paris far exceeds the offer. As such, DOC actively participates in the life and dynamics of the neighbourhood.
The organization counts 60 members. Using their individual skills, each member participates in the renovation of the building, the setting up of production workshops, documentation of the actions taken, and in the various activities of the place.
The pooling of economic and technical resources, as well as the sharing of knowledge among the members of the organization, have enabled the creation of a self-sufficient and independent project bringing together a strong team driven by commitment and human values.
