Queensbury Hockey Pink the Rink- Brayden Passino

Queensbury Spartans Hockey is hosting their Annual "Pink the Rink" Game. Queensbury Hockey puts together a fundraiser to support a local individual that needs assistance with medical bills associated with their battle with cancer.

This year the hockey team will Honor...10 year old Brayden Passino. Brayden is currently a 4th grader at WHBI. Brayden lives with his identical twin brother Camden, an older brother Alex and his parents. Brayden is battling a very rare Brian Tumor.

So, Braydens story starts like any other normal 9 year old, a typical boy and then comes the 3rd grade. During the end of his school year Brayden started to develop some headaches. Which, as parents, we don’t think too much of it. It seemed more like some anxiety to the family. Like many of us we think, ok, it’s chorus, no one likes chorus, and then lacrosse....lots of stress on a little boys plate and that brought on the headaches. So, he stopped all of his activities. They sought health care but it didn’t present bad so it was a wait and see how things go after the school year was over.

Come the month of July 2018 Braydens symptoms did not improve and his mother noticed some concerning things develop. Brayden was more tired and had some coordination issues. Some more intense studies were done and Brayden was diagnosed with DIPG. DIPG, (Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma) is a very rare, aggressive inoperable brain tumor. Basically is grows on the brain stem therefore it can not be removed. There can be treatment to decrease the size but no guarantee of getting rid of it. In July, Brayden spent some time in Albany Med due to his increase in symptoms. Treatment was planned and Brayden started a course of Radiation to shrink the tumor and some oral meds as well. This did help and improve things.

Brayden has been responding well to the radiation. He has gained back all of his lost coordination. The Dr’s are very impressed on how well he has responded. Brayden has returned to school and is having as normal a life as he can. In January he will start a new trial of oral chemo from Albany Med, as it is just a trail, they are going for minimal side effects. Then if all goes well he will start another round of radiation as well.

Lisa Wildermuth has the pleasure of knowing Brayden for the past 4 years being his school nurse and seeing him grow from K-3 grade. This is a wonderful family that truly doesn’t deserve this hurdle in life. Each day is new....unknown....yet so full as they move forward each day. Many days have been for Dr appointments and traveling to an from.

Mom, Shannon, was very grateful and overwhelmed by the thought of the hockey team supporting them in this time of need. As long as Brayden is feeling well from the new chemo he will be taking he will be at the game.

So in TRUE SPARTAN SPIRIT, I ask that we all come together and make this one hell of a night for them to enjoy!
