Queen's Rowing Banyoles 2017

“If you aim to be average you’ll almost certainly get there”, and at Queen’s Rowing we believe that dedication and consistency is what transforms average into excellence.

This year, QUBBC and QUBLBC are holding an 8 day Easter training camp in Banyoles, Spain with our coaching team including our newly appointed Club Development Officer Trevor McKnight. Trevor rowed for QUBBC whilst studying at Queen’s and was part of the Men’s 8+ that represented Great Britain at the European University Championships in 2010. He has returned to Belfast after over a season of coaching at the University of York.

The timing of this camp is crucial to our preparations for the British University Championships held over the May Day weekend in Nottingham. Warm weather camps are now common place in top university rowing programs and we need to compete with the best. Our goal is to transform winter miles and promising early season results into regatta speed.

Queen’s men topped the medal table (2 gold, 2 bronze) at BUCS indoor rowing and the combined effort of the men’s and ladies’ club landed us third overall. We also saw our best set of novice results. Not content with breaking the Irish record in November, Sam McKeown shaved a further 4 seconds off his record in January at the Irish Indoor Rowing Championships, coming home in 5:55.0.

In 2016, we brought home 7 medals at BUCS regatta (including 4 at Championship level) but we have unfinished business. In 2017 we have a stronger squad at all levels and we believe that with intensive preparation we can top last year’s achievements. Strong results in the UK also promote rowing at the university to junior talent, helping to sustain the future performance of the club.

This is where we need your help.

We face a £2500 bill to cover the transport of our boats and equipment to Spain. This will facilitate uninterrupted training and we trust that it will be the difference as we line up on the stake boats 2 weeks later in Nottingham.

Any donation you can make will go a long way in helping Queen’s Rowing finish the unfinished business.

Thank you.
