hurricane Irma animals of Barbuda

Barbuda, Antigua's sister island, was totally destroyed by the unprecedented category 5 hurricane Irma. Shortly after the hurricane, faced with the possibility of another hurricane, Barbuda was evacuated of the nearly 2000 residents and left uninhabited for the first time in 300 years.
Once Barbudans were safely evacuated, myself and a group of animal loving volunteers immobilised immediate help for the poor animals left behind. We were on the ground within 48hrs feeding and treating the animals with the assistance of pet owners and farmers.
We set an initial target of £4,000 to assist with immediate care and relief and soon exceeded that amount, which enabled us to provide more help and start looking at this assistance for the long term. To date we have raised £17,000 which has enabled us to travel to Barbuda to feed and care for the hundreds of animals left behind, as well as provide much needed assistance to farmers and their livestock.
We are currently working with 4 Barbudan farmers that have suffered great loss, some of whom have nothing but their animals left.
Our frequent expeditions to Barbuda have made it apparent that the relief needed is a lot more extreme than we anticipated.
With countless dogs left behind roaming freely on Barbuda we are now facing huge losses to livestock. Goats, sheep and poultry are being killed by dogs at an alarming rate. We have already purchased vast amounts of materials which are now on Barbuda to begin re-constructing pens in a dog proof manner.
We have set a target of £20,000 which will enable us to completely rebuild farms for the 4 farmers we are already helping and we hope with more generosity we can start helping the other farmers who have so far not received any assistance, as well as provide care and relief to all the animals for the forseeable future, while people focus on rebuilding their entire lives.
