Quarles- Teachers Against Child Detention

Donation protected
If you are like me, your heart broke when you saw images of children and families being torn apart at the border. Those images have stayed with me. Upon hearing the news, I wanted to go. I am not a lawyer or a journalist. I am not a translator. At my core, I am a teacher. I didn't know how my skills could be used. It has only been fairly recent that I learned of an organization that will put my skills to use- Teachers Against Child Detention.

I want to go to southwest Texas in February, to join teachers at a teach-in calling for the immediate release of immigrant children being held in detention while educating others. But I need your help.

My name is Beth Quarles. I have taught for over 10 years and I am currently a full-time graduate student. I have taught 1st grade, 4th grade, and at the university level. I have a master's in teaching English Language Learners and Educational Leadership. A year and a half ago, I left the classroom to work on a graduate degree in public service so I could learn how to be a better advocate for my students. I’m also a member of Teachers Against Child Detention (TACD), a group of teachers, immigrant rights organizations and ordinary people concerned about the welfare of incarcerated immigrant children. TACD is led by Mandy Manning, the 2018 National Teacher of the Year.

Thousands of immigrant children are in the custody of the U.S. government, many under appalling conditions that violate U.S. law. These children have done nothing wrong. As a teacher, I know that detention of children can cause irreparable damage to their well-being and development. Children belong in school, and with loved ones who can care for them.

On Sunday, February 17, 2019, TACD will stage a live-streamed “Teach-In For Freedom” in El Paso, Texas, where we will call on the U.S. government to end the detention and criminalization of immigrant children and their families. While this is a protest event, it is is also a time for education. Who better to share with America the difference between fake news & real news, what events have taken place to cause caravans to the States, etc.? Teachers can make a difference.

I would like to represent Arkansas at the Teach-In For Freedom. I am seeking funds to help with travel expenses as well as the purchase of children's books in Spanish. I would be grateful if you’d support me by making a donation to this GoFundMe campaign.

I believe that it is the responsibility of an educator to never stop learning. I will continue to do research in preparation for my trip. I will also be sharing my findings at my own Teach-In via social media to educate about the harm of detention, the reasons why the children came here, what Americans can do to call upon our federal government to release them and close these detention camps, and anything else I learn. I will be making stops along the way to El Paso and sharing stories of how immigrants have impacted the communities I visit.  You can follow me on social media on February 14-18 to hear/see what is going on.

Your support is very much appreciated. I hope you will join me as we work towards pushing for detained children to have the childhood and future that they deserve- an education, freedom, and people who will support them.  Please check back for updates.

With gratitude,
Beth
